Methodologically, the research combines documentary analysis with the reading of cargo records associated with the Carreira da Índia, supported by European descriptions and testimonies concerning Chinese decorative practices, especially from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The investigation follows the trajectory of wallpaper as a luxury, ephemeral, and fragile product, examining transport conditions and their visual impact, which enabled the materialization, in Portuguese daily life, of an aesthetically mediated experience of China.
It concludes that wallpaper functioned simultaneously as a commodity and a cultural device: its mercantile trajectories enabled the transformation of Chinese decorative repertoires into symbols appropriated by Portuguese circuits of consumption. |
