The episode of the Chinese Rites Controversy reveals the influence that Tomás Pereira had attained: after the prohibition of missions in China, and thanks to his arguments before the emperor, the Jesuit succeeded in having the Edict of Toleration of Christianity published. Furthermore, as an expert in music theory, he served as music teacher to the emperor himself and wrote the first work in Chinese on Western musical technique. |
