27 December 1648.
The Provincial Secretary of the said Province states:
Amáriz de Montalvão, as commended, and António Ferreira’s sons—namely, those designated by the Council prior to the appointment of Cõe. Vilamarino—shall serve in the post of *cobana duplicado* (a dual administrative and fiscal office, equivalent to a joint commissioner of revenue and customs). As Theófilo has not yet submitted his formal resignation either to the President of the Council or to its Secretary, the matter remains pending. The Council hereby requests that the Reporting Officer (*Relatoraô*) ascertain whether His Excellency has consented to this arrangement; upon confirmation, the relevant letters patent (*patentes*) for the office shall be issued forthwith. António Ferreira’s sons are to assume the post, and it must be determined who shall act as *depósitor da fazenda* (custodian of the treasury) responsible for the financial effects arising from the current commercial venture bound for China. The office in question is to be established under the jurisdiction of the *Regue* (a colonial administrative district), effective from the date of Mleg. Quenelles’ departure. The latter is to proceed to Cujo [i.e., Macau], whereupon the associated benefits—and the expeditious implementation of all related directives—shall take effect with the utmost dispatch. These instructions are to be signed by the Reverend Father Provincial (*R.Mee. Ss*), given the exceptional importance of this matter.
It appears to the Council that Mleg. de Jesuá should be instructed to transmit, without delay, a formal notification to this Council confirming that the present Provincial of the said Province has been duly apprised of the foregoing arrangements. Authority to issue such correspondence shall be delegated to the General Secretary (*Secretário g.*), acting *ad hoc*.
