ame. The desire to make you all ascend (my heirs in Xh) from these parts
of India and maritime navigation, I am compelled to participate in the services thereof, as cited,
especially with the beloved obedience and very dear to me, Po Luis da
great Xnro Sr. Make Sancho as I desire for myself and for the lesser and more
honoured members of the blessed college of the month of Jesus, and that love of God not be forgotten by
my father Manuel Godino, and the ancient obedience which I hold in particular memory.

From the year 1548
and another who burns the secretarial documents, he being of good morals and virtue, and a nephew of the Baron Dalivito named Lo Bo Co Uotos. The deliberation resulted in the appointment of two knights, one of whom was the son of Captain Dalçer de Afriqua, and another knight, along with other two individuals. These latter two came with us from the ship, motivated and residing in the house; they will be numbered and viewed as brothers, whom I commend greatly for their significant contributions to the community, as they are of great experience and good reputation. Many servants of the King also accompanied them, and they were of good standing and moral character. Among the sick, there was Cisaz Juan Hernãdez, who served as a nurse, M̃ Caspar as a preacher and provost of the sick. I would attend to their meals and engage in conversation with them, and believe me, my dear friends, that the fruit of this was a remarkable achievement, for beyond the alms we collected on the ship for the poor, the sick, these individuals were an extraordinary resource. Upon our arrival in Moçambique, they provided us with thirteen thousand maravedis from the same ship for the care of the poor and sick in the hospital, where we resided day and night without sleep, and none of us lay down to rest. We bore many and severe illnesses that we had to treat, and we administered all the sacraments to them until the last anointing, with much edification. Both the people and the entire populace were amazed, for not one but one nurse attended to them. In Moçambique, we encountered many things of great edification, and our companions, along with thirty sick men, we placed on other ships. This was due to the great distress that the miserable men and brothers endured. Thus, we took from Moçambique to the ship and in other ships, one hundred and more sick individuals, for they did not deserve such neglect. It seemed ordained that our Lord, because the poor men had nothing to eat except one meal, called moçãtes, which is like bread made of millet, lacking in honey, and water, for which no provision could be made given the land’s limitations and the captain’s inability to do more than what was possible. We sought water from the houses for the sick. We frequently visited a certain Moor, named Sõr Reque, from whom we received no impression; however, he treated us with much honour, though we could not convert him. We felt the cause of this was the lack of authority and power to give satisfactory answers, as they made it clear that the truth was that he was Xan, which is his faith. Neither the Koran nor philosophical naturalism had any influence on him up to that point. We were thus commended and bid farewell. We were very disappointed, as we hoped that our Lord would decide on what was coming on another ship, so as not to receive news from neither the ship nor the others with the most brothers. We had almost certain knowledge that the arrival would occur, and thus we despaired.

We departed Mozambique and arrived at India on 2nd or 3rd September at the port of Goa, where we have our College of Santa Fe and also known as São Paulo. We were all discontent due to the delay in the voyage, but very content to find Father M. Fr. Co., whom we can say has many virtues in such abundance and valor that nothing comparable exists. He is full of love for God, feeling nothing else, and indeed, my dear brothers, to particularize would never end. The less room there is for his role, given the numerous confessions and occupations he has, I will attempt to express it in a few words, though I fear I cannot do so without omitting something, and if it were possible to write everything, I would do so. His desire and consolation are evident in the truths and edifications of the Company and the blessed Francisco. He is your man, not old, in good health, and of noble disposition, having been a very dedicated soldier of Christ, as Saint Bernard says, even bearing many wounds of his own like David, not feeling them as a benign king feels his wounds. In such a way, we can all say that we have a living martyr among us, and I believe he will soon become one. He has endured many arrows of love for the crucified Christ and has slept in many houses where he stayed, sometimes up to three or four nights at a time. He is married: a true soldier of Christ, and nothing is worthy of the miracles he has performed and the much edification he has brought about. I do not write this to leave anything for another or to better express what is now manifest; rather, I leave it to you to complete. Farewell, most particularly, all my brothers, and to Father Luis Dagra, I ask for a Mass and litanies for the deceased with remembrance of this wretched and unprofitable Melchior Gil.
Father M. Fr. Co. has gone to Comorin, where many brothers are stationed and very close to the cross, offering themselves daily to suffer many martyrdoms, as often happens, and I am on the way to join him, as he desires, having determined to proceed with the consent of Rrimino, who expected the arrival of the other ship, which left with the rest of us, and thus I went with him. The determination of his departure seemed to me to be from the Company of Jesus, considering the miseries and little fruit in this land, saying in this land of Goa, where Father M. Fr. Co. was absent, he wanted us to bring the ship away, and we fled with the others to the port with the rest who came with him, and began to incite with his sermons and examples, which was a marvel to us, as it seemed there was nowhere that the coldness of the people and the disposition of the land could resist.

And believe me, my brothers, that the matter has grown so much that what has happened in Portugal up until now is nothing compared to what is happening there. It is due to the great effort of the agent, Ansan Pablo, who has done so much before that it seems strange, and we cannot fulfill our promises and movements. Such are the matters that I believe I will not fail to express some of them. The province of São Paulo has made significant progress; it has reformed the house greatly such that we have reached the cross, which we can reach and hope that with the prayers of all, we will not err in the path. If you desire it (as I believe everyone desires it), I will request the superior and especially the one who will make you worthy of it, and I believe he will do so, even though I do not deserve it. Finally, I preached in a certain church called Nossa Senhora da Luz, where many were present and it was the day of All Saints, during which a man who had been hanged was taken down from the gallows. There were many discussions, and with great fervor, it caused a great disturbance among those present and a great fright to the elders, to such an extent that nothing is done without his consent, I mean the consent of the clergy and the inhabitants of the land. And thus, it is astonishing to entrust someone with a public office and such perfection to give him means to manage it well: although everyone is a preacher, the superior appears strange to me, because it seems to me that I can manage without scruple of conscience, as he is very proficient in letters and languages, as well as in grammar, both he and the audience. Gaspar is a strange thing to do three or four sermons in a day without going to jail, not serving the governor's table, nor visiting the hospital; wherever he preaches, it is of great edification and fervor and is of much benefit: he and already, we have been outside, and the matter is so urgent that no one can lead a life. Paulo de Valle is cursed; at Comorin, he was sent away. Father M Fracisco O Charrisinos has genuine consciences; look at the bread you eat and do not bring it to mind in sorrow that you do not remember it more. I want to tell you this now, so do not delay in following the opinion that they will not give you, as you all know. According to the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 24, verse 42, it says: "Be on the alert, for you do not know on what day your Lord will come." And help him carry the heavy and burdensome cross until he places it on Mount Calvary, for we do not have a city here but a future one. From the year 1548
and another who burns the secretarial documents, he being of good morals and virtue, and a nephew of the Baron Dalivito named Lo Bo Co Uotos. The deliberation resulted in the appointment of two knights, one of whom was the son of Captain Dalçer de Afriqua, and another knight, along with other two individuals. These latter two came with us from the ship, motivated and residing in the house; they will be numbered and viewed as brothers, whom I commend greatly for their significant contributions to the community, as they are of great experience and good reputation. Many servants of the King also accompanied them, and they were of good standing and moral character. Among the sick, there was Cisaz Juan Hernãdez, who served as a nurse, M̃ Caspar as a preacher and provost of the sick. I would attend to their meals and engage in conversation with them, and believe me, my dear friends, that the fruit of this was a remarkable achievement, for beyond the alms we collected on the ship for the poor, the sick, these individuals were an extraordinary resource. Upon our arrival in Moçambique, they provided us with thirteen thousand maravedis from the same ship for the care of the poor and sick in the hospital, where we resided day and night without sleep, and none of us lay down to rest. We bore many and severe illnesses that we had to treat, and we administered all the sacraments to them until the last anointing, with much edification. Both the people and the entire populace were amazed, for not one but one nurse attended to them. In Moçambique, we encountered many things of great edification, and our companions, along with thirty sick men, we placed on other ships. This was due to the great distress that the miserable men and brothers endured. Thus, we took from Moçambique to the ship and in other ships, one hundred and more sick individuals, for they did not deserve such neglect. It seemed ordained that our Lord, because the poor men had nothing to eat except one meal, called moçãtes, which is like bread made of millet, lacking in honey, and water, for which no provision could be made given the land’s limitations and the captain’s inability to do more than what was possible. We sought water from the houses for the sick. We frequently visited a certain Moor, named Sõr Reque, from whom we received no impression; however, he treated us with much honour, though we could not convert him. We felt the cause of this was the lack of authority and power to give satisfactory answers, as they made it clear that the truth was that he was Xan, which is his faith. Neither the Koran nor philosophical naturalism had any influence on him up to that point. We were thus commended and bid farewell. We were very disappointed, as we hoped that our Lord would decide on what was coming on another ship, so as not to receive news from neither the ship nor the others with the most brothers. We had almost certain knowledge that the arrival would occur, and thus we despaired.

We departed Mozambique and arrived at India on 2nd or 3rd September at the port of Goa, where we have our College of Santa Fe and also known as São Paulo. We were all discontent due to the delay in the voyage, but very content to find Father M. Fr. Co., whom we can say has many virtues in such abundance and valor that nothing comparable exists. He is full of love for God, feeling nothing else, and indeed, my dear brothers, to particularize would never end. The less room there is for his role, given the numerous confessions and occupations he has, I will attempt to express it in a few words, though I fear I cannot do so without omitting something, and if it were possible to write everything, I would do so. His desire and consolation are evident in the truths and edifications of the Company and the blessed Francisco. He is your man, not old, in good health, and of noble disposition, having been a very dedicated soldier of Christ, as Saint Bernard says, even bearing many wounds of his own like David, not feeling them as a benign king feels his wounds. In such a way, we can all say that we have a living martyr among us, and I believe he will soon become one. He has endured many arrows of love for the crucified Christ and has slept in many houses where he stayed, sometimes up to three or four nights at a time. He is married: a true soldier of Christ, and nothing is worthy of the miracles he has performed and the much edification he has brought about. I do not write this to leave anything for another or to better express what is now manifest; rather, I leave it to you to complete. The province of São Paulo has made significant progress; it has reformed the house greatly such that we have reached the cross, which we can reach and hope that with the prayers of all, we will not err in the path. If you desire it (as I believe everyone desires it), I will request the superior and especially the one who will make you worthy of it, and I believe he will do so, even though I do not deserve it. Finally, I preached in a certain church called Nossa Senhora da Luz, where many were present and it was the day of All Saints, during which a man who had been hanged was taken down from the gallows. There were many discussions, and with great fervor, it caused a great disturbance among those present and a great fright to the elders, to such an extent that nothing is done without his consent, I mean the consent of the clergy and the inhabitants of the land. And thus, it is astonishing to entrust someone with a public office and such perfection to give him means to manage it well: although everyone is a preacher, the superior appears strange to me, because it seems to me that I can manage without scruple of conscience, as he is very proficient in letters and languages, as well as in grammar, both he and the audience. Gaspar is a strange thing to do three or four sermons in a day without going to jail, not serving the governor's table, nor visiting the hospital; wherever he preaches, it is of great edification and fervor and is of much benefit: he and already, we have been outside, and the matter is so urgent that no one can lead a life. Paulo de Valle is cursed; at Comorin, he was sent away.
