1. THE GREAT HISTORIC EVENT.
It may be boldly affirmed that the whole history of the Catholic Church in China has never witnessed any event more important than the 28th of June, 1926. His Holiness, Pope Pius XI, who has been called "The Pope of Missions," wanted to leave to no other Bishop of the Catholic world the unique pleasure of consecrating the first six Native Bishops of China in modern times. In the midst of people of all nationalities, who crowded the largest Church in the world, the Pope Himself imposed His hands and bestowed the fulness of the priesthood upon six Chinese priests whom He raised to the honour of the Catholic Episcopate, on the very day of the VII anniversary of His own Episcopal consecration.

It may be confidently asserted that no event in the entire history of the Catholic Church in China has held greater significance than that which took place on 28 October 1926 in St Peter’s Basilica, Rome. His Holiness Pope Pius XI—widely regarded in ecclesiastical historiography as ‘the Pope of the Missions’—chose to reserve for himself alone the singular honour of consecrating the first six indigenous Chinese bishops of the modern era. Before a congregation comprising representatives of nations from across the globe, assembled within the world’s largest church, the Pope personally laid his hands upon six Chinese priests and conferred upon them the fullness of the sacrament of Holy Orders, elevating them to the episcopate on the very seventh anniversary of his own episcopal consecration. |
