The author mobilizes the methodology of life histories to articulate individual experiences with social and cultural projections and representations, situating family trajectories within a broad historical context marked by post-Qing imperial instability in China, the Republican revolution, the emergence and confrontation between nationalists (Kuomintang) and communists (CCP), and the subsequent Japanese aggression and World War II. Within this framework, the article reconstructs how affective trajectories, marital practices, and domestic dynamics articulate with displacements, economic insecurity, and political reorganizations, including the circulation of people and memories between colonial spaces. The main conclusions underscore that social suffering and precarity were not “side” effects, but rather constitutive elements of family relations, enabling an understanding of Macau and Timor as historical nodes connected by human flows, cultural transformations, and reconfigurations of gender and kinship. |
