The focus of the study then shifts to the Spanish presence, initiated with the expedition of Fernão de Magalhães in 1521, analyzing the accounts of Antonio Pigafetta and other contemporary chroniclers. Through a survey of primary sources, the text examines the successive Spanish exploratory attempts and the subsequent integration of the Philippines into global trade routes. The author argues that the analysis of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century bibliographic sources is fundamental to understanding the dynamics of competition and cooperation between the Iberian powers in Southeast Asia. The article concludes that these sources not only map geographical exploration but also reflect the economic priorities and cultural perceptions that shaped the destiny of the archipelago within the context of European expansion and its relationship with centers such as Macau. |
