description The document is a letter dated 300 (likely 1550) from a Portuguese missionary in Shiraz, Persia, to his superior in India. It details the missionary’s experiences and grievances, including the conversion of twelve women to Christianity and the subsequent complaints from a local stepfather regarding forced conversions. The Latamas, a powerful group in Shiraz, responded by instructing the missionary to handle the situation carefully and avoid conflict. The letter also expresses concern over the missionary’s financial struggles and the need for safe passage back to India. Confidentiality is emphasized due to the potential for negative consequences from local Moors. The document provides insight into colonial-era religious conflicts and the dynamics between European missionaries and local authorities in the early 16th century.

Until now, I do not know what has happened. While staying in this court awaiting a response to the business I came for, the stepfather of the woman arrived to complain to the Latamas that the Portuguese would take him 4,000 or 5,000 ducats in Shiraz and Chaul, and would take his wife to convert her as they had done before his eyes, locking her in a house where wine was sold, and telling him that the Portuguese did so because she was related to Mahmud Famine. Concerning all these grievances, the Latamas immediately became very angry and sent me to the principal members of their council to write to Ormuz and India, instructing them to send the woman and her family only when she arrives. They also instructed Abreão Reis to inform the King of Lār and the Sōr of Carmān not to give the woman if they go to the lands of Ormuz and capture her there. This is what the Latamas have commanded. Since this concerns our holy faith, I cannot advise Your Reverence or suggest a remedy. I have explained the situation. The Latamas have weighed heavily on me, and since I cannot give them a remedy for the freedom of those with whom I travel, as Your Reverence knows, I trust in His Majesty and let Him decide what is best for His service. This land is very proud, and the Latamas adore him as a deity. When Abreão Reis wrote to the Latamas, he told him that under him the sky and earth are sustained, and thus he wrote to him all his greatness. Now, Your Reverence, as I seek reason for the way people live. They stay with me among the Portuguese and slaves, and I do not know how they sustain themselves, having spent everything I brought with me and presented as gifts. Otherwise, I would not have been able to live according to the customs to which I am accustomed. This is why the Latamas compelled me to leave quickly, promising good fortune. Although diligence did not lack on my part, the troubles they put me through have taken away the joy I had for Your Reverence, and made me write about all the minutiae of this land. I now feel deep sorrow and pain. Reply to this letter, please. Yours, 300 {{PAGE:2}} From the year 1550 29 He will inform Your Excellency of everything that he sees passing before his eyes, having witnessed everything and experienced it himself; thus, Your Excellency can be fully informed through him. I do not say more than that our lord brings him under his protection and into his service, and that he achieves a state of safety in his prayers. I entrust myself to these mountains of Tebres on the 23rd of August, 1550. These matters that I have written to Your Excellency regarding the means of guarding them should be kept secret because there are many Moors in this city who speak through translators, and if they were to learn of this writing, they would treat us as enemies and cause greater harm. The Xatamas did not instruct me to say anything other than to write the manner of counsel they had sent to the wife, and did not wish to do so for fear that it might lead to the loss of friendship after so many years. Your Excellency, consider what passes with caution. I wrote to the Lord Governor and also to the captain of that fort and to the overseer of the estate, requesting that they take my lord governor's orders in such a way as to ensure my safety, and that the Portuguese who accompany me do likewise. Your Excellency, out of love for our lord, do as desired, and thus must write to the Lord Governor. As of now, they have not done me any greater harm than to tolerate my presence, nor have they taken anything from me or imprisoned me. There is no need to make a greater scandal than what they already do. I send this to you, considering it well until I am ordered to send the message to the wife, which I do not mention out of prudence but as a theologian, believing that whatever is ordered should be known immediately. 23rd of August, 23, of 1550 Dara
