I have the honour to inform N.º that on the 8th of this month I received from the Governor of Macau the following telegram:
"Have learned that Christian mission at Tourenne attacked; named men fled to Macau and Hong Kong; women and children left without protection. I request that the Viceroy be urged to take prompt measures, and if you deem it appropriate, hold him responsible for any developments. Please reply."
To which I replied by telegram on the 8th as follows:
"Today impossible to confer with the Viceroy; have requested by written communication that energetic measures be taken, offering to request from N.º the assistance of naval troops to maintain order—an indispensable precaution for Macau."

I have the honour to inform Your Excellency that last night I received a telegram from the Lieutenant-Governor of Macau stating that the Chinese inhabitants of Taunam had been attacked and their homes plundered; some have fled to Macau, while others, including women and children, remain in Taunam without any protection whatsoever. I therefore respectfully request that Your Excellency consider taking immediate and firm measures to ensure that tranquillity is maintained in the Chinese territory adjacent to that colony.
As Portugal and China have always been friendly nations, I should be most pleased, should Your Excellency so desire, to instruct the Lieutenant-Governor of Macau to dispatch a substantial force of Portuguese soldiers to assist Chinese troops in maintaining peace. Such action would be carried out under proper authority and in accordance with the established order within Macau, and I trust Your Excellency will give this matter due consideration.

Belonging to a friendly nation, it is essential to maintain order at all costs. I wish Lieutenant Amílton every success. On the 10th, I telegraphed to His Excellency the Governor of Macau as follows: "The Viceroy has replied that he will send armed forces to maintain order. Troops are now arriving in numbers sufficient for this purpose. Should further action be required, we shall deal with it accordingly." On the same date, I also communicated officially to His Excellency, stating: "I have the honour of sending Your Excellency a Chinese-language copy of the Viceroy’s reply, corroborating the telegram I dispatched to Your Excellency today, referring to the preceding telegram."

From the legations in Peking to one of my colleges in Canton, received yesterday, I am informed: that the Diplomatic Corps in Peking considers it unlikely that the present disturbances in southern China were instigated with the intention of compelling the Powers to overthrow the current Government, which is perceived as incapable of maintaining order—this view being supported by the fact that, despite widespread unrest and property damage, no murders have occurred here thus far; such loss of life would almost certainly have taken place had the movement been genuinely anti-Christian. Furthermore, it is reported that the Hong Kong government has its forces prepared to seize, at the slightest pretext, the neighbouring territories recently acquired for that colony; and concerning the movement in the south…

In addition to these, others are present: the Brittowart (British); the D. José S’ Austria (American); the Cornete and Avalanche; and the gunboats Argus and Vigilante (French).
I am further informed that the rebels who have carried out disturbances near N. Se Houng Koung are in possession of 5,000 modern rifles. God is great, etc.
