Based on an epistolary corpus comprising approximately 127 letters (1807–1823), the author argues that Maria Bárbara’s writing functions simultaneously as an instrument of reading, mediation, and political intervention, enabling us to trace the progressive negotiation of a hybrid and assertive identity: from spectator-reader to commentator-actor-protagonist-author.
Methodologically, the text proposes a contextual and situated reading of the letters, avoiding a positivist “objectivity,” and mobilizes the concept of intercultural translation formulated by Boaventura de Sousa Santos. In this perspective, intercultural comparison demands procedures for seeking proportion and correspondence between cultural, epistemological, and everyday practical differences.
As its main conclusions, the article reveals that the epistolary exercise constitutes a continuous work of correspondence between rationalities and worlds, through which it becomes possible to reconfigure belongings, interpret events (including Brazilian independence), and rewrite historical meaning from displaced positions. |
