Starting from the impact of the sovereignty transition and the reordering of relations between the “us” and the “others” in the post-1999 period, the author argues that the reconstruction of family ties functions simultaneously as a mechanism of social legitimation and as a device of identity negotiation. Methodologically, it adopts an ethnographic approach, based on fieldwork with Macanese families, combining biographical interviews and qualitative analysis of generational accounts and memorial uses of the colonial past. The results show that genealogical memory operates through processes of selection, emphasis, and forgetting, allowing the articulation of local belongings, historically situated alliances, and perceptions of ambivalence toward the present. It concludes that, for Macanese communities, genealogies are not merely records of lineage but cultural technologies that sustain affective continuity while simultaneously reorganizing identity boundaries in response to contemporary transformations. |
