of the Province of Japan—who requests that Your Majesty
order the sum of one thousand cruzados to be restored to the College of Macau,
originally granted by King Dom Sebastião as an endowment—
a petition which Your Majesty has directed to be referred
to this Council for examination and deliberation—it is necessary
to obtain information from the Count of Aveiras, who served as Viceroy

Father António Francisco Cardim of the Society of Jesus,
General Procurator of the Province of Japan, submitted a petition to Your Majesty before this Council, stating that Your Majesty had granted him a favour and alms in allowing the one thousand cruzados—originally bestowed by His Lordship King Dom Sebastião, may God hold him in glory, in the year 1574 upon the Fathers of the Province of Japan for the endowment of the College of Macao, its head institution—which had been assigned from the revenues of the Customs House of Malacca, to cease being paid following the capture of that fortress by the Dutch; and that Your Majesty had ordered these funds instead to be assigned henceforth from the rents paid by the Religious [Religiosos] of the Company [Comp.a] of Jesus in the State of India to the Treasury [Fazenda] of Your Majesty, as appears from the provision issued by Your Majesty in January of this year.
And given that the harvest of souls has grown to such an extent—and continues to grow even today—it became necessary to increase the number of Religious, preachers of the Holy Gospel. Recognising this, His Lordship King Dom Henrique graciously granted an additional one thousand cruzados to the said College, to support the maintenance of these Colleges, for a limited period of five years, as attested by his warrant [alvará]; this grant was subsequently extended for another five years by King Filipe I during his governance of this realm, by a provision issued in Madrid on 24 February 1584. In the year 1614, King Filipe II confirmed the continuation of this annual grant of one thousand cruzados in perpetuity, as evidenced by the further provision presented herein. These thousand cruzados were originally assigned against lands and properties in the Salcete Peninsula. Later, when José Pinto Pereira served as General Overseer [Veador Geral] of Your Majesty’s Treasury in the State of India, it was considered advisable, for reasons of more reliable payment, that the assignment be transferred to the revenues from the pearl fisheries [Aljofar], as appears from his report. However, when the Count of Linhares served as Viceroy of the said State, he issued an order suspending payment on the grounds that the reports justifying the transfer were not deemed truthful. Subsequently, upon verification of the truth—that the said Religious continued their work in the spiritual cultivation of souls in that Province with great fervour, carrying out missionary activities across various regions of Japan at considerable expense—

dispersal throughout the kingdoms of Cochin, China, Tonkin, Cambodia, Laos, and the Christian communities within the same Province; accompanied by significant conversion of the heathen to our Holy Faith. Nevertheless, the said Count of Aveiras allowed the grant to remain uncollected, failing to order its disbursement, because the lay brother serving in Goa as procurator for the Province of Japan did not know how to petition for it.
Furthermore, Antonio Fran.co Cardim presented to Your Majesty an authenticated copy of another provision, issued at Madrid on 20 February 1618; by which King D. Philip II did not merely command that the said thousand cruzados be paid in actual coin, but, given that four years had passed without any payment being made to the said religious, ordered that the sum be drawn from arrears. Since the said grants differ considerably from those previously bestowed by Your Majesty’s royal predecessors upon the Fathers of the Province of Japan—namely, the grant made by King Dom Sebastião in the year 1574 by letter issued in his name, assigned to the customs revenues of Malacca and allocated for the endowment of the College of Macao; and the additional thousand cruzados granted by King Dom Henrique, which was limited to a period of five years under a provision dated 1579, assigned to the revenues of the customs house of Goa—this was subsequently extended for a further five years by King Dom Philip I, and confirmed by his son, Dom Philip II, annually and in perpetuity from the year 1614, charged upon the revenues of that region; all of which had already been reported to Your Majesty by the Count of Aveiras, former Viceroy of India, who recommended the allocation of this grant with more truthful information, so that Your Majesty might be fully apprised—further testimony will now be gathered from Joseph Pinto Pereira, overseer of the treasury (fazenda), and from the Superintendent and officers of the House of India, to confirm consistency in these matters.

Spilling their blood in Japan with exquisite forms of torment, throughout other kingdoms beyond Japan to which the government and jurisdiction of the said Province of the Company extends, more than fifteen thousand souls are baptised each year—indeed even more—making it the most distant region from India; and alone in the kingdom of Tonkin, from the year 1627 to 1645, two hundred thousand souls were baptised. It is the finest Christianity existing within the Church of God under a heathen king; yet this said Province is the poorest of the entire Society of Jesus, since all its revenues, when fully paid, never exceeded twelve thousand cruzados, whereas today they do not reach three thousand, because the four thousand cruzados granted by the Pope from the spoils of the Holy See in Madrid are no longer paid. Consequently, the Province of Japan is indebted to the sum of sixty thousand cruzados in Macao, where it has come to sell the silver belonging to the Church. In this city, it owes ten thousand cruzados, nor in recent years has it received anything from the Royal Treasury of Your Majesty, despite the two thousand cruzados previously paid. Nothing remains for the entire State of India, where Your Majesty’s treasury extends, amidst the complaints of subjects, regarding what the College of Macao deserves from Your Majesty—that You would deign to accept being its founder, as requested by the petitioner. May Your Majesty therefore order that the one thousand cruzados originally granted by King Dom Henrique and confirmed in perpetuity by the King of Castile be henceforth bestowed by Your Majesty as alms and endowment for the College of Macao, assigned against the revenue of the Aljofar, where such payments were formerly made in Goa, since the number of persons associated with the said College exceeds sixty, and they cannot be sustained solely by the one thousand cruzados which Your Majesty has recently ordered restored provisionally and allocated from the rents paid by the tenants (villões) of the Company in India to Your Majesty’s treasury. Given that King Dom João III was founder of the College of Goa, the head institution of that Province, and King Dom Sebastião founded the College of Cochin, head of the Malabar Province, may Your Majesty likewise become founder of the College of Macao, the head institution of the Province of Japan—so glorious in martyrs and in the multitude of souls baptised each year. to found anew the College in China at the court of Peguim — [STRUCK THROUGH: man] granting it His Church under the Padroado, which at present cannot be effected due to the wars afflicting that kingdom — and he requests that Your Majesty instead authorise its establishment in the city of Macao, under the title of the Immaculate Conception, where the College has already been constructed, but lacks an endowment. Therefore, from the benevolence of Your Majesty, he hopes for the fulfilment of this petition; for beyond the great alms Your Majesty bestows by supporting preachers of the Holy Gospel who are persecuted for the faith they proclaim, Your Majesty would also have the opportunity to manifest royal beneficence, extending Your Royal and liberal hands even unto the ends of the earth, thereby securing the spiritual suffrages of a founder of [E s/tal?] the College of the Society of Jesus, a Company so dear to Your Majesty.
Alongside the aforementioned petition, Father António Francisco Cardim submitted the royal charters (alvarás) cited therein, issued in the years 1579, 1607, 1614, and 1618, by which he substantiates and verifies the claims made. Upon review, the Procurator of the Treasury responded that this petition and request is one of grace, which Your Majesty may choose to grant at Your discretion.
The Council observes that, according to the documents examined and summarised herein, it appears that the religious of the Society of Jesus at the College of Machaó received annually, by provision of the Lords Kings of Portugal, predecessors of Your Majesty, two thousand cruzados set apart and distinct: one thousand as a fixed endowment drawn from the revenues of Malacca, granted by His Lordship King Dom Sebastião (now in glory), and confirmed by Your Majesty through your own provision; and the other thousand by promise of His Lordship King Dom Henrique, subsequently made perpetual by the Kings who succeeded him, initially charged upon the revenues of Salcete, and later upon those of Aljofar. It would therefore be just for Your Majesty to extend the same favour, all the more so since the request is now made expressly to Your Majesty for the endowment and sustenance of the said College, with the offer that it shall accept Your Majesty as its patron, and that the aforesaid favours granted prior to the happy restoration of Your Majesty to their rightful rule may, through Your Majesty’s service, be confirmed and regarded as valid. of the Province of Japan—who requests that Your Majesty
order the sum of one thousand cruzados to be restored to the College of Macau,
originally granted by King Dom Sebastião as an endowment—
a petition which Your Majesty has directed to be referred
to this Council for examination and deliberation—it is necessary
to obtain information from the Count of Aveiras, who served as Viceroy
of India, and by whose authority the payment
to the College was suspended; in this statement he should declare
the grounds upon which he based said order.

Father António Francisco Cardim of the Society of Jesus,
General Procurator of the Province of Japan, submitted a petition to Your Majesty before this Council, stating that Your Majesty had granted him a favour and alms in allowing the one thousand cruzados—originally bestowed by His Lordship King Dom Sebastião, may God hold him in glory, in the year 1574 upon the Fathers of the Province of Japan for the endowment of the College of Macao, its head institution—which had been assigned from the revenues of the Customs House of Malacca, to cease being paid following the capture of that fortress by the Dutch; and that Your Majesty had ordered these funds instead to be assigned henceforth from the rents paid by the Religious [Religiosos] of the Company [Comp.a] of Jesus in the State of India to the Treasury [Fazenda] of Your Majesty, as appears from the provision issued by Your Majesty in January of this year.
And given that the harvest of souls has grown to such an extent—and continues to grow even today—it became necessary to increase the number of Religious, preachers of the Holy Gospel. Recognising this, His Lordship King Dom Henrique graciously granted an additional one thousand cruzados to the said College, to support the maintenance of these Colleges, for a limited period of five years, as attested by his warrant [alvará]; this grant was subsequently extended for another five years by King Filipe I during his governance of this realm, by a provision issued in Madrid on 24 February 1584. In the year 1614, King Filipe II confirmed the continuation of this annual grant of one thousand cruzados in perpetuity, as evidenced by the further provision presented herein. These thousand cruzados were originally assigned against lands and properties in the Salcete Peninsula. Later, when José Pinto Pereira served as General Overseer [Veador Geral] of Your Majesty’s Treasury in the State of India, it was considered advisable, for reasons of more reliable payment, that the assignment be transferred to the revenues from the pearl fisheries [Aljofar], as appears from his report. However, when the Count of Linhares served as Viceroy of the said State, he issued an order suspending payment on the grounds that the reports justifying the transfer were not deemed truthful. dispersal throughout the kingdoms of Cochin, China, Tonkin, Cambodia, Laos, and the Christian communities within the same Province; accompanied by significant conversion of the heathen to our Holy Faith. Nevertheless, the said Count of Aveiras allowed the grant to remain uncollected, failing to order its disbursement, because the lay brother serving in Goa as procurator for the Province of Japan did not know how to petition for it.
Furthermore, Antonio Fran.co Cardim presented to Your Majesty an authenticated copy of another provision, issued at Madrid on 20 February 1618; by which King D. Philip II did not merely command that the said thousand cruzados be paid in actual coin, but, given that four years had passed without any payment being made to the said religious, ordered that the sum be drawn from arrears. Since the said grants differ considerably from those previously bestowed by Your Majesty’s royal predecessors upon the Fathers of the Province of Japan—namely, the grant made by King Dom Sebastião in the year 1574 by letter issued in his name, assigned to the customs revenues of Malacca and allocated for the endowment of the College of Macao; and the additional thousand cruzados granted by King Dom Henrique, which was limited to a period of five years under a provision dated 1579, assigned to the revenues of the customs house of Goa—this was subsequently extended for a further five years by King Dom Philip I, and confirmed by his son, Dom Philip II, annually and in perpetuity from the year 1614, charged upon the revenues of that region; all of which had already been reported to Your Majesty by the Count of Aveiras, former Viceroy of India, who recommended the allocation of this grant with more truthful information, so that Your Majesty might be fully apprised—further testimony will now be gathered from Joseph Pinto Pereira, overseer of the treasury (fazenda), and from the Superintendent and officers of the House of India, to confirm consistency in these matters.

Spilling their blood in Japan with exquisite forms of torment, throughout other kingdoms beyond Japan to which the government and jurisdiction of the said Province of the Company extends, more than fifteen thousand souls are baptised each year—indeed even more—making it the most distant region from India; and alone in the kingdom of Tonkin, from the year 1627 to 1645, two hundred thousand souls were baptised. It is the finest Christianity existing within the Church of God under a heathen king; yet this said Province is the poorest of the entire Society of Jesus, since all its revenues, when fully paid, never exceeded twelve thousand cruzados, whereas today they do not reach three thousand, because the four thousand cruzados granted by the Pope from the spoils of the Holy See in Madrid are no longer paid. Consequently, the Province of Japan is indebted to the sum of sixty thousand cruzados in Macao, where it has come to sell the silver belonging to the Church. In this city, it owes ten thousand cruzados, nor in recent years has it received anything from the Royal Treasury of Your Majesty, despite the two thousand cruzados previously paid. Nothing remains for the entire State of India, where Your Majesty’s treasury extends, amidst the complaints of subjects, regarding what the College of Macao deserves from Your Majesty—that You would deign to accept being its founder, as requested by the petitioner. May Your Majesty therefore order that the one thousand cruzados originally granted by King Dom Henrique and confirmed in perpetuity by the King of Castile be henceforth bestowed by Your Majesty as alms and endowment for the College of Macao, assigned against the revenue of the Aljofar, where such payments were formerly made in Goa, since the number of persons associated with the said College exceeds sixty, and they cannot be sustained solely by the one thousand cruzados which Your Majesty has recently ordered restored provisionally and allocated from the rents paid by the tenants (villões) of the Company in India to Your Majesty’s treasury. Therefore, from the benevolence of Your Majesty, he hopes for the fulfilment of this petition; for beyond the great alms Your Majesty bestows by supporting preachers of the Holy Gospel who are persecuted for the faith they proclaim, Your Majesty would also have the opportunity to manifest royal beneficence, extending Your Royal and liberal hands even unto the ends of the earth, thereby securing the spiritual suffrages of a founder of [E s/tal?] the College of the Society of Jesus, a Company so dear to Your Majesty.

of the Province of Japan—who requests that Your Majesty
order the sum of one thousand cruzados to be restored to the College of Macau,
originally granted by King Dom Sebastião as an endowment—
a petition which Your Majesty has directed to be referred
to this Council for examination and deliberation—it is necessary
to obtain information from the Count of Aveiras, who served as Viceroy
of India, and by whose authority the payment
to the College was suspended; in this statement he should declare
the grounds upon which he based said order.

Father António Francisco Cardim of the Society of Jesus,
General Procurator of the Province of Japan, submitted a petition to Your Majesty before this Council, stating that Your Majesty had granted him a favour and alms in allowing the one thousand cruzados—originally bestowed by His Lordship King Dom Sebastião, may God hold him in glory, in the year 1574 upon the Fathers of the Province of Japan for the endowment of the College of Macao, its head institution—which had been assigned from the revenues of the Customs House of Malacca, to cease being paid following the capture of that fortress by the Dutch; and that Your Majesty had ordered these funds instead to be assigned henceforth from the rents paid by the Religious [Religiosos] of the Company [Comp.a] of Jesus in the State of India to the Treasury [Fazenda] of Your Majesty, as appears from the provision issued by Your Majesty in January of this year.
And given that the harvest of souls has grown to such an extent—and continues to grow even today—it became necessary to increase the number of Religious, preachers of the Holy Gospel. Recognising this, His Lordship King Dom Henrique graciously granted an additional one thousand cruzados to the said College, to support the maintenance of these Colleges, for a limited period of five years, as attested by his warrant [alvará]; this grant was subsequently extended for another five years by King Filipe I during his governance of this realm, by a provision issued in Madrid on 24 February 1584. In the year 1614, King Filipe II confirmed the continuation of this annual grant of one thousand cruzados in perpetuity, as evidenced by the further provision presented herein. These thousand cruzados were originally assigned against lands and properties in the Salcete Peninsula. Later, when José Pinto Pereira served as General Overseer [Veador Geral] of Your Majesty’s Treasury in the State of India, it was considered advisable, for reasons of more reliable payment, that the assignment be transferred to the revenues from the pearl fisheries [Aljofar], as appears from his report. However, when the Count of Linhares served as Viceroy of the said State, he issued an order suspending payment on the grounds that the reports justifying the transfer were not deemed truthful. dispersal throughout the kingdoms of Cochin, China, Tonkin, Cambodia, Laos, and the Christian communities within the same Province; accompanied by significant conversion of the heathen to our Holy Faith. Nevertheless, the said Count of Aveiras allowed the grant to remain uncollected, failing to order its disbursement, because the lay brother serving in Goa as procurator for the Province of Japan did not know how to petition for it.
Furthermore, Antonio Fran.co Cardim presented to Your Majesty an authenticated copy of another provision, issued at Madrid on 20 February 1618; by which King D. Philip II did not merely command that the said thousand cruzados be paid in actual coin, but, given that four years had passed without any payment being made to the said religious, ordered that the sum be drawn from arrears. Since the said grants differ considerably from those previously bestowed by Your Majesty’s royal predecessors upon the Fathers of the Province of Japan—namely, the grant made by King Dom Sebastião in the year 1574 by letter issued in his name, assigned to the customs revenues of Malacca and allocated for the endowment of the College of Macao; and the additional thousand cruzados granted by King Dom Henrique, which was limited to a period of five years under a provision dated 1579, assigned to the revenues of the customs house of Goa—this was subsequently extended for a further five years by King Dom Philip I, and confirmed by his son, Dom Philip II, annually and in perpetuity from the year 1614, charged upon the revenues of that region; all of which had already been reported to Your Majesty by the Count of Aveiras, former Viceroy of India, who recommended the allocation of this grant with more truthful information, so that Your Majesty might be fully apprised—further testimony will now be gathered from Joseph Pinto Pereira, overseer of the treasury (fazenda), and from the Superintendent and officers of the House of India, to confirm consistency in these matters.

Spilling their blood in Japan with exquisite forms of torment, throughout other kingdoms beyond Japan to which the government and jurisdiction of the said Province of the Company extends, more than fifteen thousand souls are baptised each year—indeed even more—making it the most distant region from India; and alone in the kingdom of Tonkin, from the year 1627 to 1645, two hundred thousand souls were baptised. It is the finest Christianity existing within the Church of God under a heathen king; yet this said Province is the poorest of the entire Society of Jesus, since all its revenues, when fully paid, never exceeded twelve thousand cruzados, whereas today they do not reach three thousand, because the four thousand cruzados granted by the Pope from the spoils of the Holy See in Madrid are no longer paid. Consequently, the Province of Japan is indebted to the sum of sixty thousand cruzados in Macao, where it has come to sell the silver belonging to the Church. In this city, it owes ten thousand cruzados, nor in recent years has it received anything from the Royal Treasury of Your Majesty, despite the two thousand cruzados previously paid. Nothing remains for the entire State of India, where Your Majesty’s treasury extends, amidst the complaints of subjects, regarding what the College of Macao deserves from Your Majesty—that You would deign to accept being its founder, as requested by the petitioner. May Your Majesty therefore order that the one thousand cruzados originally granted by King Dom Henrique and confirmed in perpetuity by the King of Castile be henceforth bestowed by Your Majesty as alms and endowment for the College of Macao, assigned against the revenue of the Aljofar, where such payments were formerly made in Goa, since the number of persons associated with the said College exceeds sixty, and they cannot be sustained solely by the one thousand cruzados which Your Majesty has recently ordered restored provisionally and allocated from the rents paid by the tenants (villões) of the Company in India to Your Majesty’s treasury. to found anew the College in China at the court of Peguim — [STRUCK THROUGH: man] granting it His Church under the Padroado, which at present cannot be effected due to the wars afflicting that kingdom — and he requests that Your Majesty instead authorise its establishment in the city of Macao, under the title of the Immaculate Conception, where the College has already been constructed, but lacks an endowment. Therefore, from the benevolence of Your Majesty, he hopes for the fulfilment of this petition; for beyond the great alms Your Majesty bestows by supporting preachers of the Holy Gospel who are persecuted for the faith they proclaim, Your Majesty would also have the opportunity to manifest royal beneficence, extending Your Royal and liberal hands even unto the ends of the earth, thereby securing the spiritual suffrages of a founder of [E s/tal?] the College of the Society of Jesus, a Company so dear to Your Majesty.
