To the officers of the Municipal Council of the City of Nome de Deus in China, in a letter dated 28 November 1643: they write to Your Magnificence, among other matters, that in the event—should it come to pass, as they hope—that Your Magnificence should grant them the Japan trade through your embassy, they hereby cede, for the relief of that city, three trading voyages, the revenues from which could discharge the substantial debts the city currently owes to the Japanese.
It seemed fitting to the Council that Your Magnificence should grant the Company of that city the benefit of the first voyage to be undertaken upon the reopening of the Japan trade; and that they may purchase another at the price which Your Magnificence usually pays when such voyages are commissioned at the expense of the Royal Treasury. Furthermore, consideration should be given to relieving the city’s outstanding obligations, given that it has now endured eight years without trade and is therefore deserving of all favour and royal benevolence from Your Magnificence, Serene Lord.
Jorge de Albuquerque is of the opinion that the residents of the City of Macao are fully deserving of all honour and grace Your Magnificence may be pleased to bestow upon them; and that they request from Your Magnificence only three Japan voyages—those which Your Magnificence customarily commissions at the Crown’s expense—and that they shall pay for these at the prevailing rate established in Stillo. Moreover, from the proceeds of said voyages, Your Magnificence is requested to allocate funds towards the payment of the garrison (presídio) of that city, along with the regular salaries and double-pay allowances issued therein. It seemed fitting to the Council that Your Magnificence should grant the Company of that city the benefit of the first voyage to be undertaken upon the reopening of the Japan trade; and that they may purchase another at the price which Your Magnificence usually pays when such voyages are commissioned at the expense of the Royal Treasury. Furthermore, consideration should be given to relieving the city’s outstanding obligations, given that it has now endured eight years without trade and is therefore deserving of all favour and royal benevolence from Your Magnificence, Serene Lord. Jorge de Albuquerque is of the opinion that the residents of the City of Macao are fully deserving of all honour and grace Your Magnificence may be pleased to bestow upon them; and that they request from Your Magnificence only three Japan voyages—those which Your Magnificence customarily commissions at the Crown’s expense—and that they shall pay for these at the prevailing rate established in Stillo.
