The analysis questions, in particular, the meanings of the tripartition of the Estado da Índia in 1571: more than a mere sign of decline, it is suggested that the division relates to mechanisms of containment and reorganisation of power in a context of instability, including the autonomisation of Malacca. It concludes that the end of the crisis must be displaced temporally and interpretatively beyond 1575, articulating the loss of Ternate with subsequent strategic responses and with the reordering of governance conditions that would culminate, at different rhythms, in the final years of the decade. |
