Departing from Portugal for India to seek goods that people desired to escape with, and other brothers whose doctrine was half-known to us, we used great care throughout the entire voyage, which cannot be recounted here. By divine providence, half of us seemed to have been saved from such trials, and at the end of our journey, we found much charity. Upon arriving in Masambeque, some were likely admitted to the hospital where there were 100 individuals, many of whom did not wish to leave. Gaspar brought 30 of them, maintaining all of them with great abundance, providing everything necessary. From there, we continued our journey, where Jesus added to our provisions, bringing us to this Goa, where we witnessed marvels and greatness attributed to Jesus, which the members of his company had temporarily achieved. We see clear signs of the warnings given to the people who were deeply immersed in these miserable temporal benefits. Observing the works of the people this year, they now desire nothing but to serve for a single year, and those who command them say this is sufficient for them.
