| Summary: | The article analyzes the relationship between the work and perspective of Eça de Queiroz and the European imaginary regarding Chinese emigration to Macao, seeking to clarify how literary and historiographical discourses contributed to shaping perceptions of migratory flows between the second half of the nineteenth century and the period of consolidation of Portuguese rule. Aresta argues that Eça de Queiroz’s reception of Macao cannot be read as a simple “realist” mirror of Chinese mobility, but rather as an interpretive device that articulates observation, stereotypes, and debates on labor, commerce, and Asian “presences.” Methodologically, the study combines textual criticism with historical contextualization, confronting Eça de Queiroz’s references with eighteenth-century historical documentation and studies on the Portuguese and Asian presence in Macao and regional routes, including the role of missions and mercantile networks. It concludes that by intersecting literature and colonial sources, it becomes possible to identify continuities and ruptures between cultural narrative and material processes of migration and settlement, evidencing both the persistence of interpretive models and the limits of readings based on figures and typologies. |
