At Capitā and love, my lord, let this note always be in your gracious help and favour since January of the year 1549, I wrote to you at length about the fruit that is produced in these parts of the Indies, both in their fortresses and in the lands of the Infieses, by which our Holy Faith is increasing. Likewise, all the brothers in our company wrote about the fruit that is borne in the souls of God’s noble sons, which they were making progress in, and some of them left India in April with two of my companions, one a priest and the other a layman, along with three Japanese Christians, who were baptized after being well instructed in the foundations of the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ. They were taught at the College of Holy Faith in Goa, where they learned to read and write, and performed spiritual exercises with great devotion, and God so favoured them that He granted them assent within their souls, many of them recognizing the mercies and benefits they had received from their Creator and Redeemer. They progressed so much in the exercises and beyond that, with great reason, all those who walk among us should partake of the attitudes that God placed in them. They can read and write, and they entrust themselves to God to pray through books. I often asked them in what prayers they found more pleasure and consolation, and they told me that in the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary they found greater comfort and peace. {{PAGE:2}} From the year 1549. 9th they had great feelings of devotion towards the Passion, which they greatly revered, and were filled with solace and tears during their exercises prior to them. For many months we occupied ourselves in declaring the articles of faith and the mysteries of the life and the cause of the incarnation of God's son in the womb of the Virgin Mary, and the redemption of the entire human race accomplished. 10th asked them often what they thought was the best thing they possessed in our company, and they always replied that it was confession and communion, and that no man of reason could think of leaving it. After having declared our Holy Faith to them, or naming one of them, Paul of Holy Christ, with many sighs and Japanese fans, they spoke of the gods and idols they worshipped, which were the creatures themselves. They said that God made service of men. 10th asked them why they said this, and they replied that they said it because of the people of their land, who worshipped the sun and the moon, considering the sun and the moon as young creatures. Those who know Jesus serve only to illuminate day and night for men, and serve God, glorifying on earth His Son Jesus. We arrived at this city of Malacca with my two companions and three Japansis, and I the last of May 1549 reaching this city of Malacca, they gave us many news of Japan through letters from merchants, who wrote to me from there that they had learned that a great lord of those islands of Japan wished to become Christian. 10th to this they asked for an embassy that the governor of the same island sent, in order to declare our law to him, but they wrote to me that in certain parts of Japan some Portuguese merchants had arrived and the local lord ordered them to take up residence in some houses, which were deserted because the people of the land did not want to live in them, believing that they were haunted by demons. After the Portuguese had taken up residence in them, they felt compelled to strip them of their clothes and gaze upon them, seeing nothing that could have frightened them. One night, a vision appeared to them, very full of Portuguese who began to give great blows and to call out to the Portuguese with arms raised, thinking it was the work of a demon. They asked the Portuguese what had caused the blows, and he said that he had seen a vision that had greatly terrified him, and pointed to crosses around the house. The people of the land then asked the Portuguese. {{PAGE:3}} --- Carcas Dalndia which, regardless of the darkness of that night, they replied that it was a youth who had been frightened. Then, they revealed to them that the land was inhabited by the devil, asking them what remedies could be used to drive him away. They told them that the only way was to place crosses. After the Portuguese placed crosses in the house and outside, the inhabitants of the earth came to do the same, and thus crosses were placed in all those parts. I wrote to that land that the Portuguese reported that after the possession began, there was a significant increase in devotion to the Holy Faith because it was perceived to be very prudent and well-informed, and they desired to know how God might be served so as to ensure much fruit in some and in all the Japanese, meaning in their souls if their sins did not hinder it. Much time passed before I could obtain information about Japan; I was uncertain whether to go there or not. After God did not give me permission to serve Him in Japan, I decided that it would be better not to go, especially since the unbelievers of Japan put up much resistance to prevent my journey. The enemy exerted great effort to impede this trip, but we do not know why the brothers of St. Anthony accompanied us, carrying all the equipment to say mass for our dear God. I will write to you very thoroughly about everything that happens. When we arrive in Japan, we are determined to go to the island where the king resides and present him with our embassy. When they tell us that it is far away, we will show them with certainty that we have the means to achieve victory against their enemies, and we will seek help from the scholars of those parts because only one who does not know the ways of God and the manifestation of Jesus cannot serve God. We will also rely on those who trust solely in God and the manifestation of Jesus, and through salvation of souls, they can help us. There is much darkness and confusion among the infidels, as well as a great deal of demonic activity. The barbaric people, the winds, and the demons cannot harm us more than what God permits. We must be cautious, fearing only to offend God. If we avoid offending God, He, who is abundant in grace, will surely serve and protect us. We hope to receive His divine majesty’s blessing. Everything is in God's hands, either for good or for ill, and we trust much in the merits of the Holy Mother Church, spouse of Christ, and particularly in the merits of all those of the name of Jesus and His devoted followers, who will bring us such great benefits that {{PAGE:4}} In the year of our Lord 1583 We shall adore God well, for He is the consolation we carry within us. To think that God does not merely observe our intentions, wills, and aims, but that we must know them, and that His presence alone is for the sake of enabling the images of God to recognize their Creator, and for the Creator to be glorified through His creatures, which bear His image and likeness. We hope that the limits of the Holy Mother Church, the spouse of Jesus Christ, will be increased, and we are very confident that our voyage will have a good outcome. Two things help us overcome the many obstacles that the devil, acting on his own, sets before us: first, that God knows our intentions; second, that all creatures depend on God's will and cannot do anything without His permission, even the demons are subject to God's will, for when the enemy wanted to harm Job, he sought God's permission. I say this because of the many trials and dangers of death that we face in these parts. This voyage to Japan is very perilous, fraught with many lowlands and robbers, especially storms, for from ports in these regions, three ships set sail and two were severely damaged. Many times I thought that the highly learned men among us would come here to experience some trials, not small ones, in these dangerous voyages, thinking that it would be an act of daring to expose themselves to such evident dangers. Where ships are lost, but I now think that this is nothing, for I trust in God, who assures me that the letters of those who are truly learned will be guided by the Spirit of God, for in them there will be another kind of work, not small, almost always before my eyes and understanding. What many times Ignatius said that those who are truly learned must work hard to overcome and cast out all the fears that men demand, holding fast to hope and confidence in God, taking means for that. And although faith, hope, and confidence are where God gives them to whom He pleases, yet it is common for those who strive to conquer themselves by taking means for that. There is a great difference between those who have faith, hope, and confidence in God outside the dangers of death, and those who have faith, hope, and confidence in God because of their love and willingness, who can avoid dangers almost as serious as those of death. {{PAGE:5}} Correspondence from India If anyone is willing, since they have the freedom to either leave them or take them, it seems to me that those who persist in continuous death for merely serving God, with no other respect or purpose, will soon come to abhor life and embrace death to live and reign forever with God in heaven, for this is not life but a constant and destruction of glory, which we were created for. I tell you, my Japanese brothers and companions who go with us, that if they see us in Japan, the Christian priests will be scandalized by our customs, especially when we eat meat or fish, and continue to eat continual remedies that cause scandal. They say that those who come from there tell us that there is a very large number of fathers in Japan, and I tell you with great certainty that these fathers are very obedient, both to the people and to the children. This account I give you, so that you understand the extent of the necessity we have to be favored and helped with devout prayers and holy sacrifices from all of you, blessed community, in the name of Jesus, the oil or seed of Saint John, from the year 1549, we departed from Malacca for Japan, passed by the sight of China without landing or entering any port of China to Japan. The pilots say that we will reach Japan in August of the same year. From there, I will write many things and specific details about the land, the people, their customs and lives, and the deceptions in which they live, including what studies exist on the land and the exercises practiced there. Additionally, Paul of Holy Faith, my companion from Tapon, told me that he was not comforted, because in the monastery of his land, where there are many friars and studies, among them is one exercise: to meditate on this. The one who holds the position of superior of the house calls all and has a friendly conversation with them, preaches to them, and then asks each one of them to speak for an hour about this point: that a man is dying, cannot speak, and the soul is departing from the body. If he could speak during this separation and departure of the soul, what would he say? Then, after an hour, the superior of the house asks each one what they felt during the meditation and if they said anything good. {{PAGE:6}} From the year 1549. 92 I commend the good and reproach the bad for saying things that are not true. According to their memory, these individuals preach to the village every 15 days and address both men and women attending the sermons, with women especially weeping during the preaching. They depict the Inferno and the torments described in it, showing those images to the villagers. Pablo de Sancta Fé told me this; I asked him if he had heard of any particular preacher’s sermon and he recalled hearing once from one of those preachers that a wicked man or a wicked woman is worse than the devil. He said that what the devil cannot do with his deceitful ways, a wicked man or a wicked woman can achieve. Such sins as theft and giving false testimony, and others of similar nature, they say, are very eager to know more about. From there, they would have experience to write much longer. God our Lord, Infinite Lord, join us in His holy glory, for we do not know when we shall meet again, but holy obedience can make it possible. And what appears to be easy is that obedience desires this in Malaca on 2 June 1549. sierno sierno sierno To all the brethren of the company under the name of Jesus. sierno Francisco

fulltext_translation {{PAGE:1}} --- A letter from Sir Manuel Franço de Malaca to Sir Manuel Sgnacio and Sir Simon Guinclial of Portugal, and to all the other passos of Europe, dated 22 June 1549.
