Based on a comparative reading of European textual sources (from Greco-Roman antiquity to the most recent centuries), the study discusses the central issue of the correspondence between “aloes” as a generic name and the species actually used, in a context in which multiple aloines—and even products of different natures, such as “lenho-aloés”—could be confused. Methodologically, the author organizes the narrative by chronological stages, selecting representative documentary “threads” of the main developments and comparing authors’ descriptions with the geographical and taxonomic variability of the genus.
Among the results, it is noteworthy that the reputation of aloe’s efficacy acted as a driver of successive markets of knowledge and commodities, but that the heterogeneity of species and the problems of identification produced “disorders” in the learned tradition. The conclusion emphasizes that only the botany and chemistry of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries made it possible to reorder part of those ambiguities, without entirely eliminating the confusions built up by travelers and merchants over millennia. |
