description This article analyzes the industrial heritage of Macau up to 1999, with a specific focus on panchão factories, understood as the most unique expression of local pyrotechnics and as a historical, cultural, and economic vector. Starting from the periodization of the territory's industrial development (first industrialization, light industry for export, and subsequent relocation to China—Zhuhai), the author argues that Macanese industrialization was constituted from a combination of Asian processes and capital and technologies/markets linked to the West, favored by local conditions such as the absence of customs duties, security, and economic autonomy. The methodology is based on a historical-cultural and documentary analysis of factory activities and their social and productive dynamics, articulating data on industrial expansion (number of factories, export volume, and employment) with the structural factors that explain the sectoral peak and decline. It is concluded that, despite the strong centrality of export industries and the high economic impact until the 1980s–early 1990s, international competition, wage erosion, and relocations contributed to the progressive closure of factory units in the 1990s. In the case of pyrotechnics and panchões, the research reinforces the need to recognize this legacy as industrial heritage: material, technical, and symbolic, capable of linking the colonial past to the post-1999 economic reconfigurations.
