It is assumed that, due to causes and reasons already communicated in detail to Your Magnificence, the Reverend Bento did not appoint the envoy, the gentleman Gonçalo de Siqueira de Souza, to Japan. Jesus [i.e., the Jesuit community] is so deeply indebted to Your Magnificence that, in the name of all of us, we offer our most sincere thanks for the choice of your person. In a similar situation, because, in addition to his great nobility—which is of primary importance, as the Japanese greatly value it—is his natural prudence and gentleness, so well suited to dealing with them, which has given us much satisfaction. His behaviour and restraint in the city [Macao] have obliged us, both for the manner in which he himself conducted himself and for the great hardships he has endured throughout his journey, to request of Your Magnificence that, if it serves the purpose, having fully considered the causes and circumstances, you should appoint the same individual, Gonçalo de Siqueira de Souza. Jesus [i.e., the Jesuit community] is so deeply indebted to Your Magnificence that, in the name of all of us, we offer our most sincere thanks for the choice of your person. In a similar situation, because, in addition to his great nobility—which is of primary importance, as the Japanese greatly value it—is his natural prudence and gentleness, so well suited to dealing with them, which has given us much satisfaction. His behaviour and restraint in the city [Macao] have obliged us, both for the manner in which he himself conducted himself and for the great hardships he has endured throughout his journey, to request of Your Magnificence that, if it serves the purpose, having fully considered the causes and circumstances, you should appoint the same individual, Gonçalo de Siqueira de Souza. This is not only for the reasons we have mentioned, but also for the experience he has already gained in this city and the matters he has heard from the Reverend of Japan, in which, without doubt, he would demonstrate the utmost punctuality required by so powerful a King.
