The narrative reveals the resilience of Portuguese activities in the area, even in the face of difficulties imposed by political conflicts and the presence of rival powers, such as the Dutch, who held strategic bases in the region. Using primary sources, above all Vieira de Figueiredo's account, and Boxer's biography, the article analyses the context of European encounters and missed connections in the South China Sea, highlighting the survival strategies of the Portuguese elites and the complexity of international relations in that period. It concludes by emphasising the importance of these accounts for understanding the Portuguese persistence in the region and the power dynamics among European and Asian nations in the seventeenth century. |
