Through a comparative reading of four historiographical works and a commemorative catalog, the text highlights how doctrinal “discovery” and royal patronage favored the creation of urban structures aimed at social harmonization, monopolization of charity, and organization of confraternal elites, connecting devotion and sovereignty in the culture of royal absolutism. Methodologically, the contributions emphasized in the article value the integration of space into research strategies, allowing the distinction of rhythms and particularities by region. As results, the article concludes that the Misericórdias expanded simultaneously with the dynamics of the empire, adapting to contexts such as Goa and Macau, where their permanence depended on the capacity to accommodate colonial societies, in contrast to more brief local experiences vulnerable to Dutch competition. |
