description A letter from Pereira Enriquez to his family at the College of Jesus in Coimbra, dated 12 November 1546, provides insight into the challenges and experiences of early Portuguese missionaries in the Indian Ocean region. The letter details Pereira's recovery from a near-fatal illness at sea, attributed to the prayers of his fellow monks. It also recounts the difficulties faced by the missionaries in Mozambique and Goa, including the need for converts to learn the faith and the challenges of establishing a foothold in new territories. Pereira expresses concern over the lack of trained clergy to instruct converts and appeals to his family for support and prayers. The letter also mentions the conversion of boys from pagan backgrounds to Christianity and the establishment of educational institutions for the sons of local rulers. The document is part of the Arquivo de Marinha e Ultramar collection and offers valuable primary source material for scholars studying early Portuguese colonial missions and the spread of Christianity in Asia during the 16th century.

B.N.R.] Letter from Pereira Enriquez to his parents and siblings at the College of Jesus in Coimbra, written on the 12th day of November, 1546. [Main text] May the grace of the Holy Spirit always be in our aid and favour – I cannot but begin by expressing many thanks, dear brothers and sisters, for the Lord treated me with verses of prayer in these parts, for I was so close to death due to an illness that I suffered at sea, which had everyone deeply concerned, and they prayed fervently with verses of ardent prayers. Although the Lord left me (as I know), the sins I committed deserve death, yet He has allowed me to overcome this through the humble and fervent prayers of my most beloved brothers and sisters, who, as they saved me from the first death, also save me from the second death of my sins, imperfections, and negligence, which I truly feel more acutely each day. Little will life benefit my soul, and although I know that you, my dear brothers and sisters, took great care to entrust God with our welfare, especially your dear brothers, the urgent need I have compels me to ask of you in this manner, beyond the severe illness that nearly led to my demise. Throughout much of the journey, I was ill, and Pereira and Brother Morales bore much hardship and kindness; the Lord grant them their reward for their great charity, as we too were very much involved. Note: "Pereira Enriquez" is a name that appears in the original text and has been transliterated to "Pereira Enriquez" in modern British English, maintaining the original spelling while ensuring it is easily readable in contemporary academic English. The term "p̄o" is an archaic abbreviation for "Padre," which is rendered as "Brother" in the translation to maintain the formal tone appropriate for the time period. {{PAGE:2}} --- TRANSLATED TEXT --- From the year 1546. Lost in some lowlands where our ship was very close to Mozambique, we were all in despair at having to remain there. It was only through heartfelt prayers that we were able to escape. In just a few days, we arrived in Mozambique, where we were warmly received by the local vicar. Only one of our ships reached Mozambique; the others sailed off elsewhere. Father Riberio. Sometimes, the Moorish governor would arrive in a bad mood, but he always left satisfied, praise be to God. Apart from occasional bouts of fever, which were rare, we made many contributions to the ship’s provisions. I would have been glad to recount all the grievances you have endured, but it seems that even the sun does not wish to grant these favours to us for reasons unknown. I implore all of you to share your chalice with us, and remember that it is not fitting for a disciple to be above his master if the former has persecuted him, let the latter do so. Truly, I am saddened that we did not pass through less esteemed places before having made great inroads into the territory, compelling the sovereign to pay us tribute in all parts. We arrived in the city of Goa on 17 September 1546, where we were warmly welcomed by Fathers Nicholas and Master Paul. They arrived here eight days ago. What consolation it would be for your souls when, upon returning home and entering the church, we saw that they were preaching in the vernacular of this land to the native Christians, truly an honourable sight. Look at these boys from our house who, though they were once pagans, now officiate mass and recite their evening prayers with great devotion, a matter worthy of praise. Farewell, Most Holy, my dear brothers, you will surely be delighted to see them, who were once pagans and servants of the devil, now becoming priests of idols. Farewell, Most Holy. Of these boys, all of whom preach in their native tongue every Sunday afternoon, they do so not because they are learned in rhetoric, for they understand Latin well. Here in our house, we explain certain points of the gospel to them, and they preach it very well, God be praised. If someone could reveal to you the extreme necessity of true believers here in all parts, you would weep, and all those who care for the honour of the sovereign would weep too, seeing that many are converting to the faith, yet there is no one to teach and instruct them with a good example. In Mozambique, I was told by a man of faith that it would be easy to receive the faith in the island of St. Lawrence, provided that the sovereign sent a few and a man of credible reputation. He said that when speaking to the king of that land, he told him {{PAGE:3}} --- **Translation:** **Original Text:** xera el dicho rex bolueos aca y mandare hazer algú lugar apartado adonde enseña reis cinquo hijos q̃ tengo vernan tanbien otros muchachos y estarán assi apartados para q̃ mejor aprendan lo q̃ les enseñardes aquesta isla de s. lorenço dizen ser de 300 leguas. The island of São Lourenço is said to be three hundred leagues away. They also told me that Socotra would easily convert because, despite their customs and knowledge of God, they are heathens but claim to be Christians. For the love of God, I beg you, my lords, that when you visit these lands, you serve the Lord and help India, and do not let so many souls perish, which have been bought at such great cost. May God grant that some of those who are held captive by love know the truth about these parts. There is a great need here, and I do not doubt that those who follow the world’s ways, who suffer so much to bring wealth from here, will come to see these parts. I ask you, my dear lords, to pray much before the Divine Majesty that He remembers so many souls whose hearts yearn for Him, and that He may wish to come here, where the hearts of those who are not His servants may become His, and go to India, where the hearts of the Portuguese, who are always seeking, may give good example to the heathens of Xadadores and the newly converted. Truly, you will be blessed if you are sent here. Hurry with your studies and finish quickly, but do so with a deep knowledge, emphasizing charity and humility alongside learning. Finish quickly and come to these parts, bringing so much grace that will surprise you. From here, more than a thousand leagues away, in a province called China, there is a large kingdom with a prophecy that these lands will be deserted, so they guard against any strangers entering. This people are white, and to recognize strangers, those from that kingdom walk with very long hair like women. If a stranger enters, they gather men among themselves as religious figures, taking a hand or a finger as their profession. All are heathens, worshipping idols. Pray that some of us may go there and be captured, so that we may give them such an example that they may take the path of Christ. All this was told by a man of credit who is currently here, performing special exercises. If a Portuguese goes to treat with this kingdom at night, and finds himself in this state, I say this within the kingdom because all ports are open to those who wish to trade. The P. M. Franco, who is a thousand leagues away in Spalocco, says that the land there is very willing to receive the faith, having been greatly moved by the Holy Spirit according to his writings when he departed. We still do not have a letter from him, but we expect one in January, since letters cannot come here from that land except in times of great harvest, and to prevent so many souls from perishing. --- ** [Page] ** M7.1 [Stamp — top center] [Circular stamp: ARQUIVO DE MARINHA E ULTRAMAR. It would be necessary to convert many people to the faith if a significant number were to come here. They are now in the direction where Father Fr. Coelho mitigately reported that Cape Paiz Comorin lies. [Illegible: approximately 1 word, possibly 'el' or 'ellos'] El Pantéo and Juda Beira, and Father Fr. de Manzias laboured with great difficulty in teaching these people. Since they believe, they will write more extensively about what they do. I shall not write further about them. My present physical condition is somewhat better than when I was in Coimbra. God, be praised, allowed those who arrived shortly afterwards to fall ill, but they soon recovered. Father Nicolas cares for the house and, although he is poorly disposed, he never ceases to work. He sets a very good example, and Father Paulo has a large subject to work on in the Lord's vineyard. He has been occupied for several days hearing general confessions and always comes very late to eat, due to his great workload. He never has even a small piece of cabbage to rest and relax his spirit. The Lord concerns himself with him always. As we are new here, we have nothing else to do but write to you for the coming year and learn from experience some things that we can inform you about. Those who come with the help of the Lord should always be mindful of preparing the ships in which they almost always arrive hidden. Two were found in the harbour when we entered and the captain made them leave, which he did. This is now done because it seems fitting to write to you through another channel. Entrust us greatly to God N.S., as I believe you do, pray for us; our prayers have not helped us much, nor have those of those who convert here, so in this manner you will bear fruit in India while praying for us to receive grace so that we may perfectly fulfill His Most Holy Will. A letter from Pereira Enriquez to his family at the College of Jesus in Coimbra, dated 12 November 1546, provides insight into the challenges and experiences of early Portuguese missionaries in the Indian Ocean region.
