| Summary: | This article presents and contextualizes an excerpt from the work *Itinerário de las Missiones del India Oriental* (1649), authored by the Augustinian friar Sebastião Manrique (c. 1590-1669). The text focuses on the troubled voyage undertaken by the missionary between Manila and Macau in the period from 1637 to 1639, situated within the context of European "encounters and missed encounters" in the South China Sea. After his attempt to enter Japan was thwarted by the violent persecutions against Catholicism, Manrique undertakes a return journey marked by adverse conditions.
The account offers a vivid description of the perils of seventeenth-century navigation, highlighting the storm that forced his vessel to winter in Cochinchina (present-day Vietnam). Beyond its documentary value concerning maritime risks and missionary life, Manrique's narrative reveals fundamental aspects of seventeenth-century regional geopolitics.
