Tenho a honra de informar a V.ª. G.ª.
que no dia 23 do corrente enviei ao Governo
de Macau o seguinte telegrama, em resposta
ao pedido de notícias:
“Loco completo, não merece confiança
notícia a respeito. Se revolução publicada
jamais estrangeira.”
A respeito da profanação do cemitério
estrangeiro, já eu tive a honra de informar
a V.ª. G.ª. que se protestara perante o Vice-Rei
contra o Desacato, e que este respondera
ter mandado reparar as sepulturas, sem
mitir o pequeno mandarim que tinha
a seu cargo a guarda do cemitério, impor
a pena de 5 anos, de prisão a 3.500 cri-
minosos, e a de 1 mês de "conga", a um
outro que era de memória.
Sobre este assunto tenho a acrescen-
tar o seguinte, que se passou depois
da data do meu último ofício a V.ª. G.ª.

O Consul inglês (o cemitério pertence
à municipalidade inglesa de Shamien);

efficion ao Vice-Rei pedindo que o castigo imposto fosse modificado nos termos seguintes: 1º Que os três principais criminosos sofrerem primeiramente 80 chibatadas na presença do representante ou representantes dos conselhos. 2º Que ficassem por espaço de 6 meses a 1 ano nas prisões de Mambuí (as mais rigorosas, de Cantão) antes de irem cumprir nas terras da sua naturalidade os 5 anos de prisão. 3º Que a pena de 1 mês de "canga" aos de menor idade fosse cumprida no próprio cemitério. 4º Que a entrada do cemitério fosse aficada uma proclamação com a narracão do desacato, e a dos castigos impostos.
O mesmo consul inglês pediu-nos a mim e aos conselhos da Alemanha e Estados Unidos que officiamente ao Vice-Rei no mesmo sentido, para reforçar-nos o pedido que ele fizera.
O meu officio ao Vice-Rei (de 24 - do corrente) era, como o dos outros con-

do officio de N.º 87, de 12 do corrente, a respeito
da profanação, do cemitério estrangeiro pelo soldado chinês, cumprindo-me apabecear a N.º 87 as promptas e energicas medidas que tomou para que o facto se não repetisse. A respeito dos criminosos, com os meus colegas, sou da opinião,
como todos os meus colegas, de que
deve ser aplicado nos termos em que o conselho de Inflataerra neste ponto informou a N.º 87; e suponho que N.º 87 na

que me consta que Se Coutas partiram
mais 1.000 homens a reforçar as
tropas chinesas em Wen Chan, e que
d'ali começam a chegar a este porto
alguns fugitivos, trazendo notícias
muito contraditórias acerca da luta.
O que parece é que a rebelião está
perfeitamente defensada, não contra
os estrangeiros, mas contra a Dy-
nastia Manchur, ou pelo menos
contra as suas autoridades, e
que é completamente independen-
te da Sua Diversão no Norte, e que
se não tem tido até agora grande
desenvolvimento é por ela falta
de seus chefes militares prestigiouos.

I have the honour to inform Your Grace that on the 23rd of this month I sent the following telegram to the Government of Macau, in response to its request for information: “Loco complete; news on the matter not to be trusted; if revolution proclaimed, never by foreigners.”
Regarding the desecration of the foreign cemetery, I have already had the honour of informing Your Grace that a formal protest was lodged with the Viceroy concerning this act of disrespect, and that he responded stating that orders had been issued to repair the graves. However, the junior mandarin entrusted with the custody of the cemetery failed to impose the prescribed penalties—five years’ imprisonment upon 3,500 offenders, and one month of ‘conga’ (cangue) upon another individual who, it appears, was subsequently remembered.
On this matter, I have the following additional information to provide, which pertains to events occurring after the date of my last dispatch to Your Grace (dated 20th instant).

petition to the Viceroy requesting that the punishment imposed be modified as follows:
1st – That the three principal offenders first receive 80 lashes in the presence of the representative or representatives of the councils.
2nd – That they remain imprisoned for a period of six months to one year in the Mambuí prisons (the most severe, located in Cantão) before being transferred to serve their five-year prison sentence in their native territories.
3rd – That the one-month sentence of canga imposed on the younger offenders be carried out within the cemetery itself.
4th – That a proclamation detailing the act of disrespect and the punishments imposed be publicly posted at the entrance to the cemetery.
The same British consul requested that I, together with the representatives of Germany and the United States, submit an official communication to the Viceroy in like terms, in order to reinforce the appeal he had already made.

Silvano Lopes S. r. Tenho a honra de informar a V.ª. G.ª. que no dia 23 do corrente enviei ao Governo de Macau o seguinte telegrama, em resposta ao pedido de notícias: “Loco completo, não merece confiança notícia a respeito. Se revolução publicada jamais estrangeira.” A respeito da profanação do cemitério estrangeiro, já eu tive a honra de informar a V.ª. G.ª. que se protestara perante o Vice-Rei contra o Desacato, e que este respondera ter mandado reparar as sepulturas, sem mitir o pequeno mandarim que tinha a seu cargo a guarda do cemitério, impor a pena de 5 anos, de prisão a 3.500 cri- minosos, e a de 1 mês de "conga", a um outro que era de memória. Sobre este assunto tenho a acrescen- tar o seguinte, que se passou depois da data do meu último ofício a V.ª. G.ª. (De 20 do corrente). O Consul inglês (o cemitério pertence à municipalidade inglesa de Shamien); {{PAGE:2}} efficion ao Vice-Rei pedindo que o castigo imposto fosse modificado nos termos seguintes: 1º Que os três principais criminosos sofrerem primeiramente 80 chibatadas na presença do representante ou representantes dos conselhos. 2º Que ficassem por espaço de 6 meses a 1 ano nas prisões de Mambuí (as mais rigorosas, de Cantão) antes de irem cumprir nas terras da sua naturalidade os 5 anos de prisão. 3º Que a pena de 1 mês de "canga" aos de menor idade fosse cumprida no próprio cemitério. 4º Que a entrada do cemitério fosse aficada uma proclamação com a narracão do desacato, e a dos castigos impostos. O mesmo consul inglês pediu-nos a mim e aos conselhos da Alemanha e Estados Unidos que officiamente ao Vice-Rei no mesmo sentido, para reforçar-nos o pedido que ele fizera. O meu officio ao Vice-Rei (de 24 - do corrente) era, como o dos outros con- {{PAGE:3}} sules, São theor seguinte: "Tenho a honra d'acurar a recepção do officio de N.º 87, de 12 do corrente, a respeito da profanação, do cemitério estrangeiro pelo soldado chinês, cumprindo-me apabecear a N.º 87 as promptas e energicas medidas que tomou para que o facto se não repetisse. A respeito dos criminosos, com os meus colegas, sou da opinião, como todos os meus colegas, de que deve ser aplicado nos termos em que o conselho de Inflataerra neste ponto informou a N.º 87; e suponho que N.º 87 na tiranda neste assumpto, o justo pedido dos consules. Desejo a V.ª. minutos pro peribados." O Vice-Rei em officio de 37 anuncia por completado ao approvamento dos tipos, e já montem foram chibatados, os homens. Pode, pois, considerar-se findo o assumpto Tenho a honra de informar mais a V.ª. que ao governador de Macau dirigi {{PAGE:4}} os seguintes officios: Offício nº. 111, de 25 outubro: "Tenho a honra de informar a V.S.T. que me consta que Se Coutas partiram mais 1.000 homens a reforçar as tropas chinesas em Wen Chan, e que d'ali começam a chegar a este porto alguns fugitivos, trazendo notícias muito contraditórias acerca da luta. O que parece é que a rebelião está perfeitamente defensada, não contra os estrangeiros, mas contra a Dy- nastia Manchur, ou pelo menos contra as suas autoridades, e que é completamente independen- te da Sua Diversão no Norte, e que se não tem tido até agora grande desenvolvimento é por ela falta de seus chefes militares prestigiouos. O Vice-Rei interino acaba de elevar de 250 a 550 homens a guarda da sua Defesa pessoal, o que leva a crer, pelo effeito moral que o facto produz, {{PAGE:5}} PORTUGAL EM CANTÃO que aquella autoridade receia algum alteritado, em que não considera fácil suffocar o movimento, e d'ahi o facto de que Cantão será atacado, o que não os estrangeiros aqui residentes, mas aca ditamos que por ora seja possível. Deus guarde, etc. " Offício nº. 112, de 26 outubro: "Tenho a honra de informar a V.ª. E. que os 1.000 rebeldes que d'aqui tinham partido para Wenchau, regressaram bem têm menos a Cantão com outros números do Rio de Leste, pelo que parece que a ordem está ali restabelecida. Consta-me ainda, de boa origem, que tem havido grandes distúrbios na província de Kwangsi, sem contudo apresentarem o carácter alarmante. Se for preciso um exército, de 100.000 homens para suffocar a rebelião, como espalhada recentemente os jornais têm publicado. Deus guarde, etc." {{PAGE:6}} Offício nº 166, de 29 outubro: "Tenho a honra de informar a V.ª. que me contaram hoje de tarde terem os chineses feito saltar, em mandato, por meio de dinamite, uma pequena parte do Yamen do Vicariato.
