I send this letter from Asnafasapar, King of Albúpia, to the Governor of India on behalf of King John, son of King Martin, whose Glory be to the honour of the world and the grace of heaven. Peace be upon you, as you rule over sea and land and islands by the Mercy of God. Peace be shared for the crown of the Kingdom of Heaven for ever. To my Lord John, this letter was given to me from India by Abaameu, the ambassador who is in Goa. This was sent by Jacária the merchant who embarked from Casa Nova, an ambassador of the great powers that brought him from all the Xpá lands, and afterwards I learned from other letters that Abaa had passed away and left his papers in the hands of his cupelão. I pray to my very beloved Lord John and beg you, by the grace of Sir Jhū xpō, to do me such a favour and kindness that you send everything to that cupelão and his men as they can bring me the papers which I greatly esteem and for which I will have much great satisfaction and our lord will give you his praise if you do so. When Dom Xpouão arrived from the sea to these lands of my realms, For the war and with all this, he did not achieve victory against the Moors because his time and hour had not yet come, nor were we near him and he far from us, for we were far from Axénia and he was in the Kingdom of Tigray and there he sent his message through Aius. Hearing his message, I ordered my army to set out and joined with him and saw On the way news came that Dom Xpouão and many Portuguese were killed on their journey to Grada amede and were defeated and took all their arms, bombardas, and espingardas and all their possessions. Some Portuguese managed to escape to Ámacua and Daonoo, by sea and by certainty of this news, we heard much sorrow, grief, and we wept for losing so many Xpaõs strangers with us. This victory did not bring much joy; rather, it brought with it 600 Turks from Tebide, and with that, they achieved victory and reached Trigá. I sent to gather the Portuguese who were scattered, and they were found and gathered, 130 men who were seeking to return to their land by boat. Thus, all together by mutual agreement, we read under the leadership of Captain Aires Díaz, and after this, we fought against the Moors three times, and once we heard their victory. In the battle that we heard, with grace, it brought with it 210 Turks, and a great many bombardas and espingardas from the Turks. At the time of Dom Xpouão's death, he brought with him good Turks, and none escaped from them. With gratitude, he ended his life and died in this battle, and his galo Aba, along with all the bombardas and espingardas and all the weapons, fell with grace and might from the Lord God and with the help of the Jews and the favour of the King of Portugal. Thus, Dom Xpouão began and ended with Aires Díaz, and Dom Xpouão died as a very valiant and zealous martyr of Jhū xpō fighting with the Moors. To our lord and his merits, and to his officers, his holy praise and mercy. {{PAGE:2}} From 1500 to 1501, I, João Barbosa, Redemptor, hereby record the following matters concerning my jurisdiction in the lands of the New World.
