Honoured Marques, my friend: I, the King, send you greetings,
as one whom I hold in esteem. In your letter of the 16th of this month, you state, among
other matters, that the greater the damage sustained by the ships—particularly those coral vessels
which I have ordered you to prepare for the voyage to India—the more beneficial and advantageous
their journey will be; and the same suggestion was made here
by António Ferreira Fialho, in a document which you sent, accompanying
the response recorded in the minutes of your correspondence, with instructions that this
matter should be communicated to the Council of Finance, so that, having obtained the necessary
information, they might formulate the most suitable opinion
in service to me, subject to consultation. Furthermore, given the urgency of the matter, preparations
must proceed without delay. After deliberation in the Council of State, it appeared advisable
to Antonio Telles that the ship *Candelaria* and the *Carrias*
*São João* should be dispatched; though it seemed prudent to defer a final decision until we could consult
