Luiz) N.º 143, de 28 de julho de 1891. — Portugal não vai vender Macau. — Ouvimos há algum tempo dizer que um deputado propusera na câmara electiva portugueza, para se venderem algumas colónias d'Africa com o fim de se pagar as dívidas do governo. Um certo jornal estrangeiro dando notícia da proposta, alvitrou que, no caso de Portugal querer vender algumas colónias, era muito melhor que vendesse Macau, porque obteria um bom preço. O dito jornal, porém, apresentava esta ideia por ignorar que Portugal não podia alienar Macau, como explicamos em um dos nossos números anteriores. Temos agora à nossa vista o diário oficial das câmaras portuguezas, no qual vemos que um Dr. deputado chamado Almeida propôs que fossem vendidas algumas terras das colónias portuguezas d’Africa, sem que todaia fizesse a mais pequena men- ção a respeito da venda de Macau, o que é prova evidente de que o governo por- tuguez não nutre semelhante intenção.

It has been reported some time ago that a deputy had proposed in the Portuguese elected chamber the sale of certain African colonies in order to settle government debts. A certain foreign newspaper, reporting on this proposal, suggested that, should Portugal wish to sell any of its colonies, it would be far better to sell Macau, as a good price could thereby be obtained. However, this suggestion was made out of ignorance regarding the fact that Portugal is unable to alienate Macau, as we have already explained in one of our previous issues.
We now have before us the official journal of the Portuguese chambers, in which we observe that a Dr Almeida, a deputy, proposed the sale of certain territories within Portugal’s African colonies, but made no mention whatsoever concerning the sale of Macau. This omission constitutes clear evidence that the Portuguese government harbours no such intention.
