Methodologically, the study is based on historiographical research guided by unpublished documentation (to be published by the author) and by the analysis of the juridical-religious vocabulary of Portuguese sources, justifying the use of the term “New Christian” instead of “converso.” The reconstruction of Ruy Perez’s trajectory allows for mapping the continuities and reconfigurations of Sephardic commercial practices among different Asian ports and highlights how state policy and the control mechanisms of the “world of faith” conditioned mobilities, investments, and survival strategies.
It concludes that the Sephardic network in Southeast Asia and the Far East was decisive for regional economic dynamics and reveals the social complexity and tensions inherent in Luso-Asian mobility in the sixteenth century. |
