My Lord Most Magnificent and Most Excellent Sir,
On 8 July last past, I had the very great pleasure—and the distinct honour—of receiving, with all due respect and reverence, a letter from His Royal Highness the Prince Regent, our Sovereign Lord, together with a copy of another letter addressed by His Most Serene Highness to the Superior of the Fathers of the Congregation of the Mission in this city of Lisbon, dated 13 February 1800. In that letter, His Most Serene Highness directed and ordained that the said Fathers should assume responsibility for the missions in China belonging to the Patrimony of His Royal Crown, and should undertake—without delay—to supply and remedy the grave shortage and urgent need of missionaries therein.
His Most Serene Highness further instructed that the House—or Seminary—located at the western extremity (*Fim*) of this city, formerly belonging to the suppressed Society of Jesus, should be placed under the charge of the same Fathers; and that the Senate, jointly with myself and the Governor, should allocate such revenues as they deemed sufficient for the necessary maintenance of that House—or Seminary. A copy of this instruction was transmitted to me as an integral part of the aforementioned letter, so that I might carry out, personally and in full, those provisions falling within my own sphere of responsibility.
In consequence, and desiring to give prompt and complete effect to these pious and holy dispositions, I proceeded on 24 July [see marginal annotation]—accompanied by the Clerk of the Ecclesiastical Chamber—to inspect the premises in question.

For the aforementioned month of July, I delivered the above-referenced document to the said Seminary, where the following Reverend Fathers were present: Manuel Correa Saliente, Rector of the Seminary; João Agostinho Silla; Caetano Pires; and Joaquim José Leite—all members of the same Congregation. In their presence, the aforementioned letter—and the accompanying copy transmitted to me with it—was read aloud. Thereupon, formal handover of the Seminary was effected, which they accepted, as recorded in the official act (*aucto* or *termo*) drawn up for this purpose by the aforementioned Notary. A certified copy of this act is enclosed herewith for Your Excellency’s records.
Likewise, having been formally notified by the Procurator of the Senate, I attended the Town Hall (*Casa da Câmara*) of this city on 7 October, where the said Procurator was assembled with the other Municipal Councillors (*Vereadores*), the Royal Judge (*Desembargador Ouvidor*), and the Governor. There, I cast my vote concerning the arbitration of revenues deemed sufficient to ensure the necessary maintenance of the said House—or Seminary—in accordance with the stipulations set forth in the aforementioned letter and its provisions falling within my remit.
I hereby report this matter to Your Excellency.

Certified Copy.
On the twenty-fourth day of July in the current year one thousand eight hundred, in the city of Nome de Deus de Macau, China, at the Royal Seminary of St Joseph in the same city, His Excellency and Right Reverend Lord Dom Marcellino José da Silva, Bishop of this city and diocese of Macau, appeared together with me, Manuel de Souza Magalhães, Notary of the Ecclesiastical Chamber. Present were also:
— the Reverend Father Manoel Correa Valente, Priest of the Congregation of the Mission of St Vincent de Paul;
— the Reverend Fathers José Agostinho Silla, Caetano Bires, and Joaquim José Leite, Priests of the said Congregation—
all of whom are named below as witnesses.
In the presence of all those assembled, the said Most Excellent and Right Reverend Lord ordered the reading of the Royal Letter issued by His Royal Highness the Prince Regent of Our Lord (N.S.), dated 3 February 1800. In accordance with the provisions of that letter, His Excellency formally delivered possession of the said Seminary—including all its moveable property, furnishings, workshops, and all other appurtenances—to the aforementioned Reverend Father Manoel Correa Valente, Rector of the Seminary, thereby placing him in full and lawful possession thereof, as stipulated in the said Royal Letter.
To ensure due record of this act wherever required for official or archival purposes, His Excellency and Right Reverend Lord commissioned the preparation of this Instrument of Possession, which he signed jointly with the said Rector and the above-named witnesses. I, Manuel de Souza Magalhães, Notary of the Ecclesiastical Chamber, transcribed and subscribed this document.

Certified Copy.
On the twenty-fourth day of July in the current year one thousand eight hundred, in the city of Nome de Deus de Macau, China, at the Royal Seminary of St Joseph in the same city, His Excellency and Right Reverend Lord Dom Marcellino José da Silva, Bishop of this city and diocese of Macau, appeared together with me, Manuel de Souza Magalhães, Notary of the Ecclesiastical Chamber. Present were also:
— the Reverend Father Manoel Correa Valente, Priest of the Congregation of the Mission of St Vincent de Paul;
— the Reverend Fathers José Agostinho Silla, Caetano Bires, and Joaquim José Leite, Priests of the said Congregation—
all of whom are named below as witnesses.
In the presence of all those assembled, the said Most Excellent and Right Reverend Lord ordered the reading of the Royal Letter issued by His Royal Highness the Prince Regent of Our Lord (N.S.), dated 3 February 1800. In accordance with the provisions of that letter, His Excellency formally delivered possession of the said Seminary—including all its moveable property, furnishings, workshops, and all other appurtenances—to the aforementioned Reverend Father Manoel Correa Valente, Rector of the Seminary, thereby placing him in full and lawful possession thereof, as stipulated in the said Royal Letter.
To ensure due record of this act wherever required for official or archival purposes, His Excellency and Right Reverend Lord commissioned the preparation of this Instrument of Possession, which he signed jointly with the said Rector and the above-named witnesses. I, Manuel de Souza Magalhães, Notary of the Ecclesiastical Chamber, transcribed and subscribed this document.
