Como, certamente, é já do conhecimento de V. Rev.ª,
chegou aqui, na tarde de 19 do corrente, vindo de Shiuhing,
Sua Exa. Revma. o Bispo, Senhor D. José de Deus Ramalho.
2.
Acompanhavam-no: o seu Secretário, Pe. Luís Gonzaga
de Garcia, uma catequista chinesa e quatro criados também
chineses.
3. Sua Exa. Revma., bem como a sua comitiva, tinha
feito a viagem até esta cidade, parte, por terra, a pé e
parte, por rio, numa embarcação chinesa.
Apesar de, pouco depois de deixarem Shiuhing, terem
tido que atravessar um braço de rio, situado em zona de opere-
ções militares (onde ainda horas antes se travaram combates),
nenhum perigo correu Sua Exa. Revma. nem a sua comitiva, no
seu percurso até Cantão.
5. Nos postos de guarda, tanto chineses como japone-
ses, por que se viram obrigados a passar, teve Sua Exa.
Revma. as devidas atenções.
6. Sua Exa. Revma. e quantos o tinham acompanhado
até cá, seguiram hoje para Macau, no vapor de carreira.

Na visita que, na manhã de 20, teve a gentileza de
me fazer, Sua Exa. Revma. pedira notícias de V. Revma. e
inquirira de mim se haveria possibilidade de se lhe arranjar
uma passagem, por avião, até Xangai, a fim de se avistar com
V. Revma.

Como tivesse de seguir já para Macau e não lhe
fosse possível, apesar do seu muito desejo, empreender esta
viagem agora, Sua Exa. Revma. pediu-me que telegrafasse a
indagar de V. Revma. se via ou não necessidade de Sua Exa.
Revma. se deslocar até aí, para uma troca de impressões
com V. Revma., pois que a isto, parecia-me, estava Sua Exa.
Revma. disposto.
9.
Eis a razão por que se fez a indagação constante
da parte final do meu telegrama N.º 3 ao Senhor Cônsul Geral
em Xangai, que passo a transcrever:—

I hereby confirm the dispatch of an official letter addressed to the Vicar General, the Reverend Father Abílio José Fernandes, formerly stationed at Shameen (now resident in Shanghai).
This serves to confirm the telegram—No. 3—which I had the honour of transmitting to Your Excellency on 20 February of this year. I respectfully request that You be so kind as to deliver the accompanying letter to His Reverence the Vicar General, the Reverend Father Abílio José Fernandes, for which I extend my sincere gratitude.
I take this opportunity to renew to Your Excellency the assurances of my highest regard.

His Excellency and Reverend Father
Father Abílio José Fernandes,
Vicar General of the Diocese of Macau, currently residing in
Shanghai.
As Your Reverence is no doubt already aware, His Most Reverend Excellency the Bishop, the Right Reverend Dom José de Deus Ramalho, arrived here in Canton on the afternoon of 19 February of this year, having travelled from Shiuhing.

He was accompanied by his private secretary, Father Luís Gonzaga de Garcia; a Chinese catechist; and four Chinese domestic servants.

His Most Reverend Excellency and his entourage travelled to this city partly overland on foot and partly by river aboard a Chinese vessel. Although, shortly after departing Shiuhing, they were required to cross a river channel situated within an active military zone—where armed engagements had taken place only hours earlier—His Most Reverend Excellency and his party encountered no danger during their journey to Canton.

At all checkpoints—both Chinese and Japanese—through which they were obliged to pass, His Most Reverend Excellency received appropriate courtesies and formal attentions.

His Most Reverend Excellency, together with those who had accompanied him thus far, departed today for Macau aboard the scheduled passenger steamship.

During the visit His Excellency the Most Reverend Bishop kindly paid me on the morning of 20th, he enquired after Your Reverence and asked whether it might be possible to arrange an air passage for him to Shanghai, so that he might meet with Your Reverence in person.

As His Excellency the Most Reverend Bishop was required to depart shortly for Macau—and although he was most eager to undertake this journey, it proved impossible for him to do so at present—he requested that I telegraph Your Reverence to ascertain whether Your Reverence considered it necessary—or indeed advisable—for His Excellency to travel to Shanghai at this time, in order to hold a personal consultation. It appeared to me that His Excellency stood ready to make such a journey should Your Reverence deem it expedient.

It is for this reason that the final clause of my telegram No. 3 to His Majesty’s Consul-General in Shanghai—reproduced below—contained this enquiry:
‘3. KINDLY INFORM REVEREND FERNANDES: BISHOP RAMALHO HAS ARRIVED HERE; INQUIRING AFTER HIS CONDITION AND WHETHER HE CONSIDERS IT ADVISABLE FOR BISHOP TO PROCEED TO SHANGHAI SHORTLY, FOR THE PURPOSE OF A PERSONAL CONSULTATION.’

I conclude this communication with my sincere and heartfelt wishes that Your Reverence is already experiencing considerable improvement under the course of treatment presently being administered.

Most Distinguished Minister of Portugal to China.
I have the honour to inform Your Excellency that, on the afternoon of 1 February of the current year, His Right Reverend Excellency the Bishop of Macau, the Most Reverend Dom João de Deus Ramalho, arrived in this city from Shiuhing.
2.
Accompanying His Right Reverend Excellency were: his private secretary, the Reverend Father Luís Gonzaga de Garcia; a Chinese catechist; and four Chinese domestic servants.

His Right Reverend Excellency and his party travelled to this city partly overland on foot and partly by river aboard a Chinese vessel.
4.
Although, shortly after departing our Mission at Shiuhing, they were required to cross a river channel situated within an active military zone—where armed combat had taken place only hours earlier—His Right Reverend Excellency and his party encountered no danger during their journey to Canton.
5.
At all checkpoints—both Chinese and Japanese—through which they were obliged to pass, His Right Reverend Excellency received appropriate courtesies and official consideration.

This Consulate rendered His Right Reverend Excellency (who, together with his party, departed this morning for Macau aboard the coastal steamer *Carreiro*) all possible assistance, as was its duty under diplomatic protocol and consular obligation.

ARRIVED HERE SAFELY; HE REQUESTS THAT I CONVEY HIS GREETINGS TO YOUR EXCELLENCY. HE DEPARTS FOR MACAU ON 23 FEBRUARY.
2. HIS EXCELLENCY THE RIGHT REVEREND BISHOP HAS DEPARTED TODAY.
2. This Consulate extended to His Excellency the Right Reverend Bishop Dom João de Deus Ramalho and his entourage all practicable assistance, in accordance with its official duties.
3. It is hoped that His Excellency the Right Reverend Bishop completed his journey in good health and arrived safely in Macau.

I have the honour to confirm the following telegram, which I have just dispatched to Your Excellency at the request of Monsieur P. Simon, Consul of France:
“4. MADAME SIMON, WIFE OF THE FRENCH CONSUL, DEPARTS FOR MACAU ON THE MORNING OF 17 FEBRUARY, ACCOMPANIED BY THE GERMAN NURSE MS VON MENGERSEN. I REQUEST THAT YOUR EXCELLENCY KINDLY INSTRUCT THE COMPETENT AUTHORITIES TO ENSURE THAT ALL NECESSARY FACILITATIONS ARE GRANTED TO ENABLE HER ENTRY INTO MACAU AND HER PROMPT RETURN TO CANTON.”
2. Monsieur Simon requested that I convey to Your Excellency his advance thanks for the administrative facilitations he is confident will be extended to Madame Simon.
3. The rationale for the request set out in the final portion of my telegram arises from the fact that the nurse accompanying Madame Simon must return to Canton without delay. This would not be feasible under present conditions, as it is understood locally that—absent official intervention—it is currently extremely difficult to secure passage on the vessel operating the regular service between Canton and Macau.
I avail myself of this opportunity to renew to Your Excellency the expression of my highest esteem.

Como, certamente, é já do conhecimento de V. Rev.ª,
chegou aqui, na tarde de 19 do corrente, vindo de Shiuhing,
Sua Exa. Revma. o Bispo, Senhor D. José de Deus Ramalho.

Acompanhavam-no: o seu Secretário, Pe. Luís Gonzaga
de Garcia, uma catequista chinesa e quatro criados também
chineses.
3. Sua Exa. Revma., bem como a sua comitiva, tinha
feito a viagem até esta cidade, parte, por terra, a pé e
parte, por rio, numa embarcação chinesa.
Apesar de, pouco depois de deixarem Shiuhing, terem
tido que atravessar um braço de rio, situado em zona de opere-
ções militares (onde ainda horas antes se travaram combates),
nenhum perigo correu Sua Exa. Revma. nem a sua comitiva, no
seu percurso até Cantão.
5. Nos postos de guarda, tanto chineses como japone-
ses, por que se viram obrigados a passar, teve Sua Exa.
Revma. as devidas atenções.
6. Sua Exa. Revma. e quantos o tinham acompanhado
até cá, seguiram hoje para Macau, no vapor de carreira.

Na visita que, na manhã de 20, teve a gentileza de
me fazer, Sua Exa. Revma. pedira notícias de V. Revma. e
inquirira de mim se haveria possibilidade de se lhe arranjar
uma passagem, por avião, até Xangai, a fim de se avistar com
V. Revma.

Como tivesse de seguir já para Macau e não lhe
fosse possível, apesar do seu muito desejo, empreender esta
viagem agora, Sua Exa. Revma. pediu-me que telegrafasse a
indagar de V. Revma. se via ou não necessidade de Sua Exa.
Revma. se deslocar até aí, para uma troca de impressões
com V. Revma., pois que a isto, parecia-me, estava Sua Exa.
Revma. disposto.

Eis a razão por que se fez a indagação constante
da parte final do meu telegrama N.º 3 ao Senhor Cônsul Geral
em Xangai, que passo a transcrever:—

I hereby confirm the dispatch of an official letter addressed to the Vicar General, the Reverend Father Abílio José Fernandes, formerly stationed at Shameen (now resident in Shanghai).
This serves to confirm the telegram—No. 3—which I had the honour of transmitting to Your Excellency on 20 February of this year. I respectfully request that You be so kind as to deliver the accompanying letter to His Reverence the Vicar General, the Reverend Father Abílio José Fernandes, for which I extend my sincere gratitude.
I take this opportunity to renew to Your Excellency the assurances of my highest regard.

Vicar General of the Diocese of Macau, currently residing in
Shanghai.
As Your Reverence is no doubt already aware, His Most Reverend Excellency the Bishop, the Right Reverend Dom José de Deus Ramalho, arrived here in Canton on the afternoon of 19 February of this year, having travelled from Shiuhing.

He was accompanied by his private secretary, Father Luís Gonzaga de Garcia; a Chinese catechist; and four Chinese domestic servants.

His Most Reverend Excellency and his entourage travelled to this city partly overland on foot and partly by river aboard a Chinese vessel. Although, shortly after departing Shiuhing, they were required to cross a river channel situated within an active military zone—where armed engagements had taken place only hours earlier—His Most Reverend Excellency and his party encountered no danger during their journey to Canton.

At all checkpoints—both Chinese and Japanese—through which they were obliged to pass, His Most Reverend Excellency received appropriate courtesies and formal attentions.

His Most Reverend Excellency, together with those who had accompanied him thus far, departed today for Macau aboard the scheduled passenger steamship.

During the visit His Excellency the Most Reverend Bishop kindly paid me on the morning of 20th, he enquired after Your Reverence and asked whether it might be possible to arrange an air passage for him to Shanghai, so that he might meet with Your Reverence in person.

As His Excellency the Most Reverend Bishop was required to depart shortly for Macau—and although he was most eager to undertake this journey, it proved impossible for him to do so at present—he requested that I telegraph Your Reverence to ascertain whether Your Reverence considered it necessary—or indeed advisable—for His Excellency to travel to Shanghai at this time, in order to hold a personal consultation. It appeared to me that His Excellency stood ready to make such a journey should Your Reverence deem it expedient.

It is for this reason that the final clause of my telegram No. 3 to His Majesty’s Consul-General in Shanghai—reproduced below—contained this enquiry:
‘3. KINDLY INFORM REVEREND FERNANDES: BISHOP RAMALHO HAS ARRIVED HERE; INQUIRING AFTER HIS CONDITION AND WHETHER HE CONSIDERS IT ADVISABLE FOR BISHOP TO PROCEED TO SHANGHAI SHORTLY, FOR THE PURPOSE OF A PERSONAL CONSULTATION.’

I conclude this communication with my sincere and heartfelt wishes that Your Reverence is already experiencing considerable improvement under the course of treatment presently being administered.

I have the honour to inform Your Excellency that, on the afternoon of 1 February of the current year, His Right Reverend Excellency the Bishop of Macau, the Most Reverend Dom João de Deus Ramalho, arrived in this city from Shiuhing.

Accompanying His Right Reverend Excellency were: his private secretary, the Reverend Father Luís Gonzaga de Garcia; a Chinese catechist; and four Chinese domestic servants.

I have the honour to confirm the following telegram, which I have just dispatched to Your Excellency at the request of Monsieur P. Simon, Consul of France:
“4. MADAME SIMON, WIFE OF THE FRENCH CONSUL, DEPARTS FOR MACAU ON THE MORNING OF 17 FEBRUARY, ACCOMPANIED BY THE GERMAN NURSE MS VON MENGERSEN. I REQUEST THAT YOUR EXCELLENCY KINDLY INSTRUCT THE COMPETENT AUTHORITIES TO ENSURE THAT ALL NECESSARY FACILITATIONS ARE GRANTED TO ENABLE HER ENTRY INTO MACAU AND HER PROMPT RETURN TO CANTON.”
2. Monsieur Simon requested that I convey to Your Excellency his advance thanks for the administrative facilitations he is confident will be extended to Madame Simon.
3. The rationale for the request set out in the final portion of my telegram arises from the fact that the nurse accompanying Madame Simon must return to Canton without delay. This would not be feasible under present conditions, as it is understood locally that—absent official intervention—it is currently extremely difficult to secure passage on the vessel operating the regular service between Canton and Macau.
I avail myself of this opportunity to renew to Your Excellency the expression of my highest esteem.
