The reading of cartographic images and legends allows for a discussion of the origin of representations of Timor, distinguishing between the possible diffusion of Eastern maps and potential elements of direct sighting during the route of the fleets to Malacca. Complementarily, the comparison with Tomé Pires's "Suma Oriental," begun in 1512 and completed in 1515, highlights how the island becomes integrated into the circulation networks of sandalwood — a key commodity of Southeast Asia — and how Portuguese economic categories were constructed from information gathered in Malacca. It is concluded that the Luso-Timorese connection was consolidated above all through documentary and commercial mediation, rather than through continuous presence, thereby preparing the organization of maritime strategies for the adjacent islands. |
