description This letter, dated 6 February 1551, from the Viscount of the King of India to Father and Master Symão Pudens details the state of Portuguese expeditions and missions in India during the early 16th century. The writer, likely a member of the Portuguese Jesuit order, reports on the damage to a war expedition and the general discontent within the company. He expresses confidence in the prayers of Father Symão Pudens, attributing safety during the voyage to divine intervention. The letter highlights the establishment of a college in Cranganor by Friar Vincent of the Franciscan order and describes the fervent devotion of its students. It also mentions the hope for the arrival of Mateo Francisco and the potential contributions of Fathers Dio Vieyra and Luis Gómez to the mission in Cochin. The document provides valuable insights into the religious and administrative activities of Portuguese missionaries in India during the late 16th century.

On this journey that brought me to India out of necessity, I am convinced that my love for the prayers he made me say has led me to kiss his hands anew, and I am so confident in them that I certify in truth that I have never experienced any real storm or danger at sea, and I always believed that I would pass to India. I found the war expedition greatly damaged and everything else in a state of disorder. In our ship, I hope for him who has remedied it in such a way that it will be better than ever before, and due to pressing needs, I must not break the thread or promise to return. I found the company very content and that they are bearing much fruit there, which is to praise our Lord greatly, almost as the Apostles did in their apostolate. Since I am one of this company and am under his obedience, I believe we are obliged to say everything that seems necessary for their benefit and success. In Cranganor, there is a college that Friar Vincent of the Order of St. Francis founded for young men of the region; they also performed such great devotion in the Mass that they said no man in the company did not shed many tears, and they doubled the sorrow of not finding another such fruit in the college of St. Joseph. And because all priests must write extensively on this matter, I refer to them. I have great news about Mateo Francisco, hoping daily that Malacca will confirm their arrival soon and send them to us. Among the company, a few have come for our Lord's aid, and if among them could be the Father Dio Vieyra, he would receive great consolation. Father Luis Gómez affirms that he would make much fruit and that it would be very necessary. On the journey, he does so much service to our Lord that it was a very large enterprise for a father who wanted to go alone. He says he wrote so many letters that he finally asks our Lord to preserve and protect his virtuous person for his service in Cochin on January 5, 1551. Please forgive me for not writing to Fathers Vieyra and Luis Gómez, as indeed I do not have time for it. Belheriz thought it best to leave for lack of priests. Viso Rey / Dom Afonso
