Methodologically, the study articulates a historical reading of institutional landmarks—with particular emphasis on the Asylum for Orphans of the Misericórdia of Macao and the workshop spaces of the Holy Childhood—with a linguistic approach to onomastics, treating the Portuguese names attributed in the context of baptism as documentary evidence of belonging and recognition. It concludes that, in a scenario of intense epidemics and social instability that increased the contingent of orphans, baptism operated as a first step toward the construction of citizenship and integration, reconfiguring relations between Chinese communities and the colonial administration. The article also suggests that the subsequent persistence of cultural and linguistic patterns coexisted with the gradual incorporation of Catholic and onomastic elements. |
