The research proceeds through a historiographical and documentary reading of coeval testimonies (correspondence, epistles, accounts, and works on urban grandeur), articulating eulogistic eloquence with the discursive construction of circulation networks. The analysis further considers the spatialization of this urban experience, highlighting the Ribeira das Naus and the Rua Nova dos Mercadores, as well as the presence of the "world" at Court and in the churches. It concludes that the representation of Lisbon as an Asian entrepôt is not limited to the economic register: it produces new sensory and cultural patterns, integrating products, people, and practices that arrived and spread from the port. Thus, the "entry" of Asia into Europe is simultaneously material, social, and rhetorical. |
