Starting from the context of the first Western contacts in the Yuan dynasty and, above all, the religious missions of the late Ming dynasty, the author argues that methodological divergences in the way of interacting with Chinese society hindered the acceptance of Western initiatives and delayed the construction of effective linguistic mediations. Methodologically, the text combines a historical-cultural review of contact policies and the acquisition of linguistic knowledge with a linguistic reflection of a historical-descriptive orientation, seeking to explain how learning and adaptation practices influenced the consolidation of romanized systems and phonetic notation. The narrative highlights, in particular, the contrast between frustrated attempts and the gradual success associated with Michele Ruggieri and, subsequently, Matteo Ricci, whose respect for customs and strategies of rapprochement favored the circulation of knowledge and local trust. As a contribution, the author formulates questions for the study of linguistic change and its consequences, connecting these historical trajectories to the genesis and problematization of romanization (and its phonetic equivalents) in the teaching and research of Mandarin. |
