| Summary: | This article analyzes the Misericórdia of Isla Hermosa (Taiwan, 1632–1642) as a lay initiative and as an institution of Portuguese inspiration, yet situated in a particular colonial context—that of a presidio and an unstable civil community. The author argues that the local Misericórdia should not be directly compared with other Misericórdias of the Portuguese empire, nor with the long-standing experience of Manila, for it differed in duration, social structure, and its role in the actual conditions of the settlement's survival.
The methodology rests chiefly on a critical reading of the available documentation, centered on a single principal document, supplemented by secondary references. On the basis of this evidence, the text reconstructs the institution's genesis and its ties to the Dominicans. Its main promoters are identified as Fr. Jacinto Esquivel and Governor Juan de Alcarazo, whose actions appear linked to concrete needs of assistance and to apostolic strategies.
Among the conclusions, it is highlighted that the Misericórdia took shape in a liminal space between mission and military administration, functioning as an instrument for organizing charity (including a projected infant school) and as a mechanism for financing Dominican work, before disappearing after a decade. |
